Regarded as the masterwork of Japan's Golden Age of Film, UGETSU is credited with simultaneously helping to popularize Japanese cinema in the West and influencing later Japanese film.

The first in a four-film Female Prisoner Scorpion cycle charts the vengeance of Nami Matsushima—a gullible, unjustly imprisoned woman who must find a way to escape and exact revenge upon the man who betrayed her, and who becomes an avatar of survival and an unlikely symbol of female resistance in a male-dominated world.

From the creators of GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995), this hand-drawn animated feature took seven years to complete, from the painstakingly rendered serenity of the island’s Shinto shrines to the climactic finale featuring thousands of squirming, morphing ghosts and spirits. Lauded by critics as something both children and adults will fall in love with after seeing.

Directed by Kenji Misumi (LONE WOLF AND CUB), the first Zatoichi film was so popular that its sequel went into production the very same year. It now stands as one of Japan's longest-running film series with total of 26 films made between 1962 and 1989.
