Upcoming Rocky Horror Picture Shows

Don’t Dream It, Be It!

At any Rocky Horror Picture Show, your limits of what constitutes public intercourse and decency will be challenged. But we have created a safe and welcoming place for stretching sexual boundaries and awareness, so if this appeals to you, come on down to the Clinton Street Theater on any Saturday Night, because we’ve got a home for you.

We get questions all the time about whether or not it’s OK to bring kids. If the question is coming from a parent, all we can say is that you are the best judge of whether or not your teen or pre-teen is mature enough to come and enjoy the film with or without you.

If you’re easily offended, then this is probably not the best place for you to spend your entertainment dollars.

Please note the different types of screenings; some weeks feature a live shadowcast—often performed by an independent group called The Clinton Street Cabaret, and some screenings feature a rotating host.

Rocky Horror Theater-Approved Props

Rice

At the beginning of the film it’s the wedding of Ralph Hapschatt and Betty Munroe. As the newlyweds exit the church, throw the rice along with the on-screen wedding guests.

Ring

When Brad asks Janet to marry him, you can do the same thing with your sweetie.

Newspapers

When Brad and Janet are caught in the storm, Janet covers her head with a newspaper, The “Plain Dealer.” You don’t want to get wet, do you?

Flashlights

During the “There’s a light” verse of “Over at the Frankenstein Place, “you can light up the theater with flashlights or your cellular phone and similar devices. Sorry, no open flames–remember you are wearing newspapers on your head!

Rubber Gloves

During and after the creation speech, Frank snaps his rubber gloves three times. Later, Magenta pulls these gloves off his hands. If you snap your gloves in sync each time, you’ll create a fantastic sound effect.

Noisemakers

At the end of the creation speech, the Transylvanians respond with applause and noisemakers. Hip, hip, hooray!!!

Toilet Paper

When Dr. Scott enters the lab, Brad cries out “Great Scott!” At this point, you can hurl rolls of toilet paper into the air (preferably Scotts, because it’s common sense on a roll).

Toast

When Frank proposes a toast at dinner, members of the audience throw toast into the air (dry, not buttered…otherwise things could get a bit sticky).

Party Hat

At the dinner table, when Frank puts on a party hat, adorn your own head, and join the party.

Bell

During the song “Planet Schmanet Janet,” ring the bell when Frank sings, “Did you hear a bell ring?”

Cards

During the song “I’m Going Home,” Frank sings, “Cards for sorrow, cards for pain.” At this point you can shower the theater with playing cards.

No water bottles or hotdogs allowed! Bag check required upon entry.

Rocky Horror Costumes

Dr. Frank-N-Furter

Dr. Frank-N-Furter appears throughout most of Rocky Horror Picture Show wearing an all black outfit consisting of a corset, panties, a garter belt with thigh high stockings, and a pearl necklace. Near the beginning of the movie he wears a black cape as well.

Easiest Frank costume: There is no easier Frank outfit than what he wears in the lab when he axes Eddie. What you’ll need is costume makeup, a big “pearl” necklace (large white beads will work just fine), black platform sandals, pink dish washing gloves, black fishnet stockings, a wig and a green surgeon’s gown with a red triangle on the left breast. As an added effect, you can decorate the surgeon’s gown with some blood splatters for that just-killed-Eddie look.

Columbia

Columbia appears in several different outfits during the movie. She first appears in a sequined costume as she tap dances across the floor during the Time Warp. Next, she covers her costume with an apron and wears a face mask up in the laboratory. Finally, Columbia appears in the floor show wearing a corset and stockings, similar to Frank’s.

The easiest Columbia look: During the performance of “Toucha Toucha Touch Me,” while hanging out with Magenta and spying on Janet and Rocky, Columbia is in vertical-striped blue and white men’s pajamas, open-toe black heeled shoes, with all her makeup is removed with the exception of lipstick, and she’s wearing Mickey Mouse ears on her head (minus the logo). If you want to be really authentic, you could go braless and place a few strategic rips in the PJ’s, but that’s up to you.

Riff Raff

Riff Raff spends the movie wearing a sort of butler’s outfit. Long black pants, a black jacket, and a white shirt. At the end of the movie he dons a futuristic spaceman type outfit.

Magenta

Magenta is the maid of the castle. She wears a black dress with a little white apron over it and a little white hat. At the end of the movie she puts on a spaceman costume that matches Riff Raff’s.

Janet

Janet starts the movie dressed in a dapper little suit consisting of a white sweater over a pink dress and with a fancy hat. At the end of the movie, Janet along with many other characters, is dressed in a corset and thigh-highs that match Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s.

Easiest Janet costume:  Janet allows you the option of going in simple underwear: white bra, white panties, white slip, purse, and skin-toned stockings, but again, some people prefer more cover. So other considerations include the lab coat look in the creation scene, the bedroom robe, or wearing an orange sheet in a towel-like fashion, like Janet hiding her shame when she’s discovered with Rocky by Frank, Brad and Doctor Scott.

Brad

While the option of going in white briefs, socks, a watch and glasses is a pretty simple one for Brad, if you’d like more cover, you can opt for a white knee-length lab coat as seen in the lab scene where Frank reveals Rocky, or you can wear a light blue satin robe like the one thrown at Brad when he’s led to the bedroom. Keep on your socks, glasses, watch and underwear regardless of which of the three looks you choose.

Rocky

Rocky has one of the simplest costumes, he wears a pair of itty bitty gold shorts. If you want to go as a more modest Rocky, you can go as Rocky before they removed the bandages or you can go with your bottom half covered by an orange sheet. If you do decide to go in the undies, use padding so everyone doesn’t have to see your “equipment.” Female Rockys should use an unpadded, underwire nude bra to prevent any breast escapes.

Transylvanian Costumes

The Transylvanians’ outfits are all based on tuxedos, but each Transylvanian adds her or his own touches. Colorful sashes, funny little hats, fancy sunglasses, they’re all fun and bright.
