When a ronin requesting seppuku at a feudal lord’s palace is told of the brutal suicide of another ronin who previously visited, he reveals how their pasts are intertwined – and in doing so challenges the clan’s integrity.
Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize and directed by Kurosawa contemporary Masaki Kobayashi (The Human Condition, Kwaidan), the film is a fierce evocation of individual agency in the face of a corrupt and hypocritical system.
Screened in Japanese with English subtitles.
