16mm Nyback Showdown

IT’S SURREALIST MAY AND THE NYBACK SHOWDOWN IS THROWING DOWN SOME OF THE WEIRDEST 16MM SHORTS IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE TO CELEBRATE!

Whether it be Eastern Bloc animations about non-conformity or live-action fever dreams involving furniture, the NYBACK ARCHIVE team will be slinging all things surreal and bizarre in a knock-down, dragout festival of the obscure, obtuse and oblong!

Watch as two 16mm programming teams (DARKROOM ASSOCIATES and ASTRAL PROJECTIONS) fire up their projectors and trade cinematic jabs back and forth by screening selections from the world-famous DENNIS NYBACK 16mm film archive!   No one knows what will be screened next – cartoons, music, educational films, documentary shorts and weird advertisements run amok! There are no rules, no prisoners, and no show is the same!  A one-of-a-kind film free-for-all that will amuse, confuse and contuse your cinematic soul! 

DENNIS NYBACK (1953-2022) was the former owner of the Clinton St. Theater (among many theaters) and an internationally renowned film curator and programmer. Over his 40 year career he amassed one of the most unique and rare film collections in the United States, an archive he regularly would draw from to create one-of-a-kind film programs that screened in the Pacific Northwest and around the world. We celebrate Dennis’ legacy by doing what he did best; putting on a show and sharing some of the coolest unseen cinema projected on 16mm film!
