PEASANTS OF THE SECOND FORTRESS (1971)(Church of Film)

In the fields just outside of Tokyo, thousands of student protesters joined the peasantry to fight the building of the Narita International Airport. Constructing massive earthworks, tunnels, towers and fortresses, together they waged pitched battles against hordes of riot police and corporate workers sent to seize the land. Embedded among them was the incredible Ogawa Production team, who lived for years in the fortresses of the Sanrizuka Struggle.

A jaw-dropping achievement, a spectacular monument to humanity in revolt, PEASANTS OF THE SECOND FORTRESS depicts the revolt against state oppression with its cameras directly in the fray, amid the fires, the hoses, the batons, and the clash of activists against monstrous police.
