Having recently relocated his family from a cramped apartment in Tokyo, to a spacious suburban home, Katsuhiko Kobayashi is hellbent on keeping his picture-perfect idea of middle-class success alive. But, when the new house suddenly begins to rot from the inside, Katsuhiko’s mind deteriorates with it and his family soon join him in their own rapid descent into madness.

All notions of what it means to be a normal family are dropped into a blender and warped to hell in Gakuryū Ishii’s classic 1984 deconstruction of the nuclear household. From the cyberpunk godfather of Crazy Thunder Road and August in the Water, this underrated gem falls somewhere between the masterful work of Yasujirō Ozu and Takashi Miike.
