A lost black cat leads Okiyo, the daughter of a samurai, to Seijiro—a shamisen player in a theater troupe. She falls in love. But he is betrothed to the passionate and jealous lead actress, Mitsue. Unable to accept Okiyo’s advances, he gifts her his treasured instrument. Tragedy soon befalls both the cat and Okiyo, and the instrument drifts down the river, from owner to owner, harboring ghostly secrets and the hunger for revenge.
THE GHOST CAT & THE MYSTERIOUS SHAMISEN is a dark and uncanny ghost story, and the only Japanese kaibyo horror film to survive the second World War. Ornamented with stunning visual effects, kabuki sets, and haunting music, it’s a unique, sombre, and spooky treasure!
