Raised on the works of, and in most cases directly mentored and taught by, the masters of Japan's first wave of underground cinema, a new generation of experimental film workers emerged in the 80s. While advancing and breaking away from the work of their predecessors, these younger filmmakers expressed a distinct lyricism, and often a sense of alienation and horror.
