Maria José is a young trans woman living in a small town outside of Barcelona. Her chauvinistic father resists his daughter’s feminine nature and attempts to indoctrinate her into the ways of traditional manhood. But Maria José runs away to Barcelona and meets another trans woman, a cabaret actress named Bibi (played by trans actress Bibiana Fernández). She begins to make her journey toward living her life authentically. Catalonian Anarchist Vicente Aranda’s SEX CHANGE cut through decades of exploitation and cliches to make this frank, researched, and sympathetic portrait. CW: Brief domestic violence, transition narrative.
