In 17th century Brazil, escaped slaves flee to the hills and form their own city state, Quilombo dos Palmares. Ganga Zumba becomes the President of this visionary, democratic society. But to maintain their enchanted community, they must fight back their Portuguese oppressors who seek to enslave them again. Carlos Diegues’s QUILOMBO is based on real history, but explodes with mysticism, magic realism, and Afrofuturism, in brilliant popping colors, all brought together by a brilliant soundtrack by Gilberto Gil. It’s a psychedelic epic.
