MARTYRS OF LOVE (1967) (Church of Film)

Three surrealist reveries exploring love and desire, all told in”dream realism” by Jan Němec and Ester Krumbachová. As our characters float through a fluid series of dreamy scenarios, their strange and amorous encounters bring them to the brink of anarchy.

MARTYRS OF LOVE is a rarely scene masterpiece of the Czechoslovak New Wave, adorned with the music of the Prague Spring. Songs are included by Czech popstars Marta Kubisová and Karel Gott, singing the surrealist poems of Krumbachová. It also features the first fabulous appearance to the two Maries, whom Krumbachová would make the chaotic heroines of the classic Daisies.
