Written, directed by and starring Keenen Ivory Wayans in his feature debut, this film parodies the blaxploitation genre (Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Foxy Brown, The Spook Who Sat by the Door, Top of the Heap, et al.) with an outstanding cast of well-known celebrities and up-and-coming actors for the time, including John Witherspoon, Robert Townsend, Chris Rock, Kadeem Hardison, Ja’Net DuBois, Antonio Fargas, Clarence Williams III, musician Isaac Hayes and football star Jim Brown, along with Damon, Shawn, and Marlon Wayans.
Made on a relatively small $3 million budget, the film grossed over $13 million at the box office, launching the Wayans’ career into a new realm and setting the stage for the TV series In Living Color and The Wayans Bros., plus subsequent parodies like Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, White Chicks, and the Scary Movie franchise.
