When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora.
The first film adaptation of any Daisuke Igarashi manga series (winner of the American Library Association’s 2010 Great Graphic Novels for Teens), critic Peter Debruge praised the film for its “splendid attention to detail and seemingly boundless imagination,” for composer Joe Hisaishi’s “lovely” score, and for director Ayumu Watanabe’s “stunning adaptation” and exploration of the “age-old tension between those who recognize a rare and fragile being that they wish to protect and the callous impulse to experiment.”
Presented in Japanese language with English subtitles.
