In the 1880s, Friedrich Nietzsche leaves his family, teaching, and friends, forming a menage-a-trois commune with his lovers Lou Andreas-Salomé and Paul Rée. The three of them vow to live beyond moral codes; but their entanglement is tragic and complicated. Addicted to opium and going mad from syphilis, Nietzsche drifts apart, through Italy, and toward oblivion.
