Izumi, a competitive diver, forms a close friendship with Mao. But strange things are happening in Fukuoka, which seem to be linked to the landing of two meteorites in nearby mountains. When an accidents befalls Izumi, she awakes with a hyperawareness of the environment on a subatomic level, and a fascination with the mountains… AUGUST IN WATER saw cyberpunk cult icon Gakuryu (Sogo) Ishii shifting toward metaphysical, poetic, and hallucinatory films in the 90s, under the influence of Philip K. Dick and J.G. Ballard.
