December: Coen Brothers Series

Throughout the month of December the Clinton Street Theater pays tribute to two of the most influential filmmakers of the last 30 years, the Coen brothers. You can choose your own Coen brothers adventure, with 12 screenings of 4 iconic films from this dynamic duo.

First up, catch Frances McDormand’s screen debut in the Coen Brother’s first film, Blood Simple. With a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and the approval of the great Rogert Ebert, this film is a worthy throwback for both Coen superstans and newcomers alike. Plus, Frances McDormand at age 27 is already amazing on screen.

Next up, we fast forward 25 years to Burn After Reading. We find a now seasoned Frances McDormand alongside an all-star cast that reflects the gravitas the Coen duo accumulated over the years. With a budget 25x that of Blood Simple and a resounding performance as a drunk CIA agent by John Malkovich, this film is the dark comedy you didn’t know you needed this holiday season. Don’t sleep on the Carter Burwell soundtrack, which won a International Film Music Critics Association Award for Best Score For a Comedy Film award that year.

Frances McDormand returns yet again for the third film in this series, with her award winning role in Fargo. This film stacked up awards higher than a Midwestern snowdrift. It is an undisputed modern classic that is well worth a view on the big screen.

Lastly, keeping with the long running tradition of showing The Big Lebowski during the holidays, the Clinton Street Theater presents 5 chances to catch The Dude on analog 35mm format, an experience that you will only find here. Paired with our take on a White Russian, made with sake instead of vodka, The Big Lebowski is a memorable holiday experience with a uniquely Portland twist.
