Part of the Hanabi Japanese Festival running Monday, July 24 through Monday, August 7. Full festival passes available.
The first in a four-film Female Prisoner Scorpion cycle charts the vengeance of Nami Matsushima—a gullible, unjustly imprisoned woman who must find a way to escape and exact revenge upon the man who betrayed her, and who becomes an avatar of survival and an unlikely symbol of female resistance in a male-dominated world.
Featuring stunning pop-art compositions and ultra-violent outbursts, the film has been described as “pure exploitation” by critics as is one of the best know examples of the “pinky violence” subgenre developed by Japanese film company Toei in the 1970s as a way to compete with the influx of American grindhouse.
Presented in Japanese language with English subtitles.
