We are happy to announce the Clinton St. Resistance series is back! Here's how it works:

  • On select Mondays we offer discounted admission to films in the hope that as many people as possible will attend.
  • Proceeds after licensing costs from these screenings will be totaled at the end of the month and donated to a non-profit or community organization which we believe is doing good work in Portland and beyond.

That's it! You get to watch a great film for cheap and get an easy way to support an awesome organization that is supporting our community.

In June, we've selected the non-profit Black & Pink—a prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing.

Celebrate Pagan May at the Clinton Street Theater! Our theme this month relishes in the long tradition of film using rustic iconography outside the traditional Abrahamic religions for entertainment purposes, often to shock audiences with a hidden look at traditions outside the norm to stoke fears of female sexual empowerment. Ranging from classic comedy to campy exploitation and plenty of experimentalism in between, our slate of May titles is for anyone who enjoys seeing how witchcraft, nature worship, and hellish dedications have been portrayed on the silver screen. Come let this series cast a spell on you.

The Magician
Director:
Ingmar Bergman

Year:
1958
Runtime:
101 minutes

Ingmar Bergman's The Magician (Ansiktet) is an engaging, brilliantly conceived tale of deceit from one of cinema’s premier illusionists. Max von Sydow stars as Dr. Vogler, a nineteenth-century traveling mesmerist and peddler of potions whose magic is put to the test in Stockholm by the cruel, eminently rational royal medical adviser Dr. Vergérus. The result is a diabolically clever battle of wits that’s both frightening and funny, shot in rich, gorgeously gothic black and white.
