From Bloomers to Lycra

Three short documentary films directed by women about women who have found self-empowerment, and happiness on their bicycles: The Wind in Our Hair, The New Woman: Annie 'Londonderry' Kopchovsky, and Georgena Terry will play at a family-friendly screening that is free and open to the public. In addition to the screening, there will be an opportunity to learn more about bike groups and bike support in the Portland area.

Doors open at 1pm, screening begins at 1:15.

The Wind in Our Hair, directed by Jennifer Hardacker, is a 20-minute documentary that celebrates the way bicycling can bring joy, increase self-confidence, and boost one’s overall sense of well-being. The film presents the personal experiences of five women that represent various ages, riding abilities, and backgrounds. Likewise, a chorus of young girls shares how bicycling makes them feel. The film also touches on issues of gender inequality in sport, body image issues, and exercise as a means to combat depression.

The New Woman is a 27-minute documentary film by director Gillian K. Willman that tells the story of Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky, a fiercely independent and free thinking young woman who found freedom by reinventing herself as the daring “Annie Londonderry” — entrepreneur, athlete, and celebrated globetrotter. In 1894, this 23-year old Jewish immigrant and mother of three changed the world for women by climbing aboard a 42-pound bicycle and setting off from the tenements of Boston to circle the globe. At the time, The New York World called her trip “the most extraordinary journey ever undertaken by a woman” and said it marked the birth of “the new woman” — independent, dynamic, and free.
