After Something: Experimental Shorts

Underground films are borne out of love, not out of a desire for fame or to have an impact on popular culture. The Portland Underground Film Festival (PUFF) has, at its core, the mission to pay tribute to those films and videos that challenge commonly held attitudes toward technique, content, and form. Our intent is to honor those films that excel in pushing the boundaries of the cinematic arts to create a new audio-visual language.

After Something: Experimental Shorts

There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.

After Something

everyday star

Director Rajee Samarasinghe

Everyday states of being and decay are observed through the infinite scope of the cosmos and the restorative light which emanates from it, driving cinematic and photographic impulses.

Coma Berenices

Director Mariachiara Pernisa and Morgan Menegazzo

In a hypothetical intergalactic journey we could not recognize any constellation, the mapping of the celestial sphere is nothing but a vice of the gaze. The proximity close to any star we would identify others, visible only from this new perspective: the sighting.

To the keen eye, pixels are stars and everything is possessed.

The Open Window

Director Lynne Siefert

Like restless, waiting missiles, towering pillars of industrial machinery send us to the desolation of the lunar surface.

Director Maxime Lauret

In the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Bardo is the intermediate state between death and rebirth in which the deceased experiences visions of one's previous life before being reborn.

Director Kate Lain

An impressionistic portrait of glass and metal artist Evan Chambers.

Swan Song to Sentience

Director Sarah Little

An experimental, non-narrative, eco-documentary that explores the once intimate and increasingly distant relationship between humans and nature.

Director Jeanette Fantone

"Duet" is an audiovisual piece exploring the relationship between two sisters. In separate existence, their eventual permeation is found with synchrony and saturation.

Second Life

Director Esther Herron

This short was created with the intent to simulate dreams as I experience them. We spend roughly a third of our life asleep. When we dream an entirely new world, unique to our individual subconscious, bursts open and in it we experience  the most marvelous and strange things; this is our second life. This is a glimpse of my second life.

Lost in a Forest

Director Nicole Baker

The perceptual slip that occurs when we find ourselves alone in a dark forest.
