SUMMARY:Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
DESCRIPTION:In one of his defining roles\, Forest Whitaker brings a commanding serenity to his portrayal of a Zen contract killer working for a bumbling mob outfit while trying to adhere to the code outlined in the book of Yamamoto Tsunetomo’s recorded sayings\, Hagakure. \n\n\n\nFeaturing cinematography by Robby Müller (Paris\, Texas) and a mesmerizing score by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA\, director Jim Jarmusch combines his love for Jean-Pierre Melville (Le Samouraï) and Seijun Suzuki (Branded to Kill) with samurai mythology for an eccentrically postmodern take on the hit-man thriller. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jim Jarmusch\n Year: 2000\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 116 minutes

SUMMARY:Black Girl (1966)
DESCRIPTION:This film is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council and the Office of Arts & Culture. \n\n\n\nOusmane Sembène is one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers who ever lived. The internationally renowned African director made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring Black Girl (La noire de . . .). \n\n\n\nSembène\, who was also an acclaimed novelist in his native Senegal\, transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a figurative and literal prison—into a complex\, layered critique on the lingering colonialist mindset of a supposedly postcolonial world. Featuring a moving central performance by Mbissine Thérèse Diop\, Black Girl is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Ousmane Sembène\n Year: 1966\n Country: Senegal\n Runtime: 59 minutes

SUMMARY:A Dry White Season
DESCRIPTION:This film is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council and the Office of Arts & Culture. \n\n\n\nA white middle class South African suburbanite (Donald Sutherland) with no interest in politics agrees to help his black gardener (Tony Award winner Winston Ntshona) find his jailed son. His investigation opens his eyes to the horrors committed by the secret police and turns him into a target.Director Euzhan Palcy became the first black female director to have a film produced by a major Hollywood studio. Palcy went undercover in Soweto to research the riots. With the help of Dr. Motlana (Nelson Mandela’s and Desmond Tutu’s personal physician)\, she eluded the South African secret services by posing as a recording artist and flew local actors to the U.K. under artist visas and then down to Zimbabwe for location shoots to get around South African travel bans. \n\n\n\nInitially censored by officials who said it could harm attempts at apartheid reform\, it became one of the largest and last films about apartheid before Mandela’s release from prison. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Euzhan Palcy\n Year: 1989\n Country: United States\, France\n Runtime: 107 minutes

SUMMARY:MARTYRS OF LOVE (1967) (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Three surrealist reveries exploring love and desire\, all told in”dream realism” by Jan Němec and Ester Krumbachová. As our characters float through a fluid series of dreamy scenarios\, their strange and amorous encounters bring them to the brink of anarchy. \n\n\n\nMARTYRS OF LOVE is a rarely scene masterpiece of the Czechoslovak New Wave\, adorned with the music of the Prague Spring. Songs are included by Czech popstars Marta Kubisová and Karel Gott\, singing the surrealist poems of Krumbachová. It also features the first fabulous appearance to the two Maries\, whom Krumbachová would make the chaotic heroines of the classic Daisies.
