SUMMARY:Lady Snowblood and Song of Vengeance
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Japanese Film Festival\, running Sept. 1 – 13. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nA special Labor Day double feature; two films for the price of one! \n\n\n\nGory revenge is raised to the level of visual poetry in Toshiya Fujita’s stunning film. Set in late nineteenth-century Japan\, the story follows the single-minded path of vengeance taken by a young woman (Meiko Kaji) whose parents were the unfortunate victims of a gang of brutal criminals. Fujita creates a wildly entertaining action film of remarkable craft\, an effortless balancing act between beauty and violence. \n\n\n\nMeiko Kaji returns in the invigorating sequel. Our furious heroine is captured by the authorities and sentenced to death for the various killings she has committed; however\, she is offered a chance of escape—if she carries out dangerous orders for the government. More politically minded than the original and full of exciting plot turns and ingenious action sequences. \n\n\n\nBoth films will screen back-to-back with a short intermission between the two. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles.

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Japanese Film Festival\, running Sept. 1 – 13. \n\n\n\nIzumi\, a competitive diver\, forms a close friendship with Mao. But strange things are happening in Fukuoka\, which seem to be linked to the landing of two meteorites in nearby mountains. When an accidents befalls Izumi\, she awakes with a hyperawareness of the environment on a subatomic level\, and a fascination with the mountains… AUGUST IN WATER saw cyberpunk cult icon Gakuryu (Sogo) Ishii shifting toward metaphysical\, poetic\, and hallucinatory films in the 90s\, under the influence of Philip K. Dick and J.G. Ballard.

SUMMARY:Perfect Days
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Japanese Film Festival\, running Sept. 1 – 13. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nA perfect song that hits at just the right moment\, the play of sunlight through leaves\, a fleeting moment of human connection in a vast metropolis: the wonders of everyday life come into breathtaking focus in this profoundly moving film by Wim Wenders.
