SUMMARY:SUB ROSA — An Afternoon of Low Lives & High Strangeness
DESCRIPTION:APOCALYPSE CONFIDENTIAL is proud to present a double feature of Portland sin and sleaze\, as well as live readings of encounters with the peculiar and paranormal. Join us for an afternoon of low lives and high strangeness! \n\n\n\n“Portland Expose” is a Poverty Row film noir from 1957\, based on a LIFE magazine article about Senate hearings on organized crime and labor corruption in the City of Roses. Banned at the time from screening within a 30-mile radius of Portland\, it’s a schlocky\, sinsational story of pushers\, pimps\, and pinball hustlers!“Unhinged” is a 1982 slasher flick made by locals and filmed after hours at the Pittock Mansion–with Gus Van Sant serving as a location stout. Deemed a video nasty by UK censors\, it’s an exemplary work of scuzzy\, sleazy sinema\, made the Weird Portland way.

SUMMARY:Kickstand Comedy Presents: Brandie Posey Live Album Recording
DESCRIPTION:Kickstand Comedy Presents: Comedian Brandie Posey (Comedy Central\, 3X Bridgetown Comedy Festival alumni\, Lady to Lady Podcast) as she returns to Portland to record her second comedy album\, a follow up to her critically acclaimed debut Opinion Cave.  \n\n\n\nOriginally planned to be recorded in 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic\, Brandie’s sophomore effort has become even more robust and precision-honed as she continued to tour across the country from the stages of the Kennedy Center in D.C. to crowded DIY basement shows in Whitesburg\, KY. In this new hour of material\, Brandie points her trademark whimsical\, yet fierce storytelling style towards her love of dogs\, 12 foot skeletons & the triumph that is aging into a person your younger self would think is rad as hell!  \n\n\n\nBrandie has chosen Portland to record in because of how amazing the audiences have always been to her\, and is excited to work with Kickstand Comedy\, an organization that shares her values & brings the same DIY energy to every project. She is excited to perform at the historic Clinton Street Theater\, as she has worn just about as many hats in entertainment as its hallowed halls. \n\n\n\nThe recording of Posey’s last album Opinion Cave was listed by Comedy Cake as one of 2015’s Most Memorable Stand Up Comedy Moments.  \n\n\n\n“Huddled in the back of a comic shop in Ventura about an hour north of Los Angeles\, punk rock comedian Brandie Posey proceeded to make magic while she recorded her debut comedy album… Posey’s stories are equally an intimate affair and a pure riot. Being there I felt like I was in on one of the raddest secrets in comedy\, but I know that even more people will know Brandie Posey soon enough when the album drops in 2016. I can’t wait to re-live it.” \n\n\n\n\n**Kickstand Comedy strives to eliminate barriers from comedy – a portion of seats at every Kickstand show are pay-what-you-want at the door. \n\n\n\nKickstand Comedy is a 501c3 nonprofit theater that seeks to serve the needs of our community—providing programming and educational outreach that helps people laugh\, connect\, and thrive together. We are known for curated live comedy with a focus on quality\, community\, and unique voices and are guided by a diverse and dedicated Board of Directors. We work tirelessly to advance our mission\, our vision\, and strive to make Portland comedy undeniable!

SUMMARY:Sex Change (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Maria José is a young trans woman living in a small town outside of Barcelona. Her chauvinistic father resists his daughter’s feminine nature and attempts to indoctrinate her into the ways of traditional manhood. But Maria José runs away to Barcelona and meets another trans woman\, a cabaret actress named Bibi (played by trans actress Bibiana Fernández). She begins to make her journey toward living her life authentically. Catalonian Anarchist Vicente Aranda’s SEX CHANGE cut through decades of exploitation and cliches to make this frank\, researched\, and sympathetic portrait. CW: Brief domestic violence\, transition narrative.

SUMMARY:Art & Pep
DESCRIPTION:The first state to decriminalize homosexuality\, Illinois was on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic\, anti-discrimination laws and marriage equality. But long before government officials would utter the words “HIV\,” it was gay bars that transformed into community centers and became ground zero in the fight. \n\n\n\nSidetrack opened in 1982 and with Art Johnston and Pepe Peña at the helm\, it went from a 900-square-foot windowless watering hole to a pillar of Chicago’s gay business district\, spanning over eight storefronts and multiple levels. Art and Pep have watched as the politicians who once would have them jailed now court the community for votes. The space has become a source of political and financial support for LGBTQ+ rights. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Mercedes Kane\n Year: 2022\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 88 minutes

SUMMARY:Neubau
DESCRIPTION:Summer in Brandenburg. Markus is torn between the love for his grandmothers in need of care and the longing for a different life in Berlin. A crowd of shimmering demons keeps appearing in his daydreams. An allusion to the queer chosen family that awaits him in the city and saves him from his loneliness. Markus’ boxes to move to the big city are packed. So\, when he falls in love with Duc things get even more complicated. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Johannes Maria Schmit\n Year: 2020\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 82 minutes

SUMMARY:The Others (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Alessandra and Flavia are two unbelievably fashionable partners who live a pop-art masterpiece of a flat. They want a child. And… that’s pretty much the plot. THE OTHERS is a unique entry in the Sapphic genre most notable for what it isn’t: No tales of debauchery\, corruption\, or tragedy. Just the quiet (did I say very fashionable yet?) lesbian couple next door building a family. This portrayal ironically attracted the attention and ire of the censors and condemned the film to obscurity.

SUMMARY:Desert Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first film was groundbreaking upon its 1986 release: a love story about two women\, produced and directed by a woman. In the 1959-set film\, an adaptation of a beloved novel by Jane Rule\, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno to file for divorce\, but winds up catching the eye of someone new\, the younger free spirit Cay (Patricia Charbonneau)\, touching off a slow seduction that unfolds against the breathtaking desert landscape. \n\n\n\nWith smoldering chemistry between its two leads\, an evocative jukebox soundtrack\, and vivid cinematography by Robert Elswit\, Desert Hearts beautifully exudes a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Donna Deitch\n Year: 1986\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 96 minutes

DESCRIPTION:One of the most searing romances of the 1990s\, Wong Kar Wai’s emotionally raw\, lushly stylized portrait of a relationship in breakdown casts Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung as a couple traveling through Argentina and locked in a turbulent cycle of infatuation and destructive jealousy as they break up\, make up\, and fall apart again and again. Setting out to depict the dynamics of a queer relationship with empathy and complexity on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong—when the country’s LGBT community suddenly faced an uncertain future—Wong crafts a feverish look at the life cycle of a love affair that’s by turns devastating and deliriously romantic. \n\n\n\nShot by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle in both luminous monochrome and luscious saturated color\, Happy Together is an intoxicating exploration of displacement and desire that swoons with the ache and exhilaration of love at its heart-tearing extremes. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Wong Kar-wai\n Year: 1997\n Country: Hong Kong\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:Violet Hex Presents: Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best trans films you’ve likely never heard of\, Antonio Giménez-Rico’s landmark 1983 documentary Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul) explores the lives and loves of a group of six transgender women living in Madrid in the years following Spain’s transition to democracy. But more than that\, it’s a loving portrait of a culture finally emerging from the shadows after being hidden for far too long. \n\n\n\nAntonio’s portrait of these women gave them the freedom to portray their own stories with their own friends & family\, but in a stylized scripted narrative framework with gorgeous cinematography by Teo Escamilla. \n\n\n\nThe stories of Eva\, Nacha\, Loren\, Josette\, Reneé\, & Tamara were never properly released outside of Spain and never available on home video\, but finally Altered Innocence and Anus Films is proud to present this vital testament to just how far we’ve come—and how far there’s still left to go. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Antonio Giménez Rico\n Year: 1983\n Country: Spain\n Runtime: 96 minutes
