SUMMARY:The Lost Letter (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A valorous\, strong and simple Cossack named Vasyl is given the arduous task of traveling across the wilderness and plains\, and (literally) to Hell and back\, to deliver an important petition for help to the Russian Empress Elizabeth. Based on an adventurous comedy by Nikolai Gogol\, Boris Ivchenko’s THE LOST LETTER was one the last and most striking films of the Ukrainian Poetic Cinema movement. Banned immediately by Soviet censors\, it’s a lost masterpiece of its time! \n\n\n\n \n Director: Borys Ivchenko\n Year: 1972\n Country: Soviet Union (Ukrainian SSR)\n Runtime: 70 minutes\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmu9hdYRc9c

SUMMARY:The Story of a Three Day Pass
DESCRIPTION:Melvin Van Peebles’s edgy\, angsty\, romantic first feature could never have been made in America. Unable to break into a segregated Hollywood\, Van Peebles decamped to France\, taught himself the language\, and wrote a number of books in French\, one of which\, La permission\, would become his stylistically innovative feature debut. \n\n\n\nTurner (Harry Baird)\, an African American soldier stationed in France\, is granted a promotion and a three-day leave from base by his casually racist commanding officer and heads to Paris\, where he finds whirlwind romance with a white woman (Nicole Berger)—but what happens to their love when his furlough is over? \n\n\n\nChanneling the brash exuberance of the French New Wave\, Van Peebles creates an exploration of the psychology of an interracial relationship as well as a commentary on France’s contradictory attitudes about race that is playful\, sarcastic\, and stingingly subversive by turns\, and that laid the foundation for the scorched-earth cinematic revolution he would unleash just a few years later with Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Melvin Van Peebles\n Year: 1967\n Country: France\n Runtime: 87 minutes

SUMMARY:Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back
DESCRIPTION:Free screening\, followed by a Q&A discussion with Selma\, Dean and Ponyboy from the movie. \n\n\n\n\nThis documentary follows queer Palestine liberation activists fighting against the “Rainbow Generations” pro-Israel propaganda tour in Seattle in 2012. \n\n\n\nSelma Al-Aswad is a Palestinian community organizer\, ethnographer\, and researcher based in Seattle. She’s been actively engaged in Palestinian liberation organizing for the past 20 years and is currently a member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective. Ponyboy is an Armenian/South Asian trans artist\, now based in Portland\, OR\, who has been working in queer music and cultural activism for the past two decades. Dean Spade is a Seattle-based writer\, video maker and organizer whose work focuses on trans liberation\, and ending cops\, prisons\, borders and the US military. \n\n\n\nSubtitles + ASL interpretation\, theater is wheelchair accessible\, masks required. Please take a COVID test before coming. \n\n\n\nThis screening is taking place on unceded lands of Chinook and related tribes\, and they request support for recognition at ChinookJustice.org  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMore about Pinkwashing Exposed:\n\n\n\n“Pinkwashing” is a term activists have coined for when countries engaged in terrible human rights violations promote themselves as “gay friendly” to improve their public image. Israel is the country most famous for this strategy\, having initiated it as part of a rebranding campaign has been engaged in for the last decade. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, activists in the Pacific Northwestern region of the US responded to an Israeli Consulate-funded pinkwashing tour featuring Israeli gay and lesbian activists that was coming to the region. Local queer Palestine solidarity activists exposed the “Rainbow Generations” tour as pro-Israel propaganda and got some of the events\, including the tour’s centerpiece event hosted by the City of Seattle’s LGBT Commission\, cancelled. \n\n\n\nA significant backlash ensued involving the Seattle City Council and Seattle’s leading LGBT and HIV organizations. Through the inspiring story of these activists’ victory\, Pinkwashing Exposed explores how pinkwashing works and what local activists are doing to fight back. Pinkwashing Exposed was made in Seattle\, on Duwamish Land. The Duwamish are in a long fight for recognition by the US government. We can help by donating.

SUMMARY:Belly
DESCRIPTION:Ever since they were kids\, Sincere (Nas) and Buns (DMX) have lived life close to the edge\, doing whatever it takes to survive. As adults\, they build up their kingdom of crime on drug dealing and robbery. But Sincere grows weary of the criminal lifestyle and joins a black Muslim religious group. Buns\, on the other hand\, sinks deeper into criminality and faces serious prison time. The cops offer him a deal—assassinate the head of the Muslim group\, and he will go free. \n\n\n\nWritten and directed by Hype Williams\, one of the most celebrated and prolific music video directors of all time (Wu-Tang Clan\, The Notorious B.I.G.\, OutKast\, Tupac Shakur\, Jay-Z\, A Tribe Called Quest\, Missy Elliott\, DMX\, TLC\, Dr. Dre\, Busta Rhymes\, Snoop Dog\, Future\, Jack White\, Beyoncé\, et al.)\, BELLY (1998) was plagued by production issues and seen as a dud by critics despite making millions from its relatively limited budget\, much of which was spent on the dramatic opening sequence. Magic Johnson even refused to screen it at his theater chain. \n\n\n\nToday\, the film still has one of the biggest Rotten Tomatoes divides (20% critics\, 87% audience) in history. But it’s now considered a cult film\, seen in a new light by audiences almost 30 years later. Critic Khris Davenport recently wrote that Williams “blazed a trail in Black cinema that some filmmakers are only just now starting to understand and build upon.” \n\n\n\n \n Director: Hype Williams\n Year: 1998\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 92 minutes

SUMMARY:Fright-B-Wary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Presented by QwerkiflixWe’re programming off beat films; films that mainstream festivals ignore or don’t appreciate. We’re looking for dark\, esoteric\, nightmarish stories. Our audience will be coming in from a dark\, cold\, rainy winter day and we want to creep them out. \n\n\n\nAlthough this is the first year of this festival\,  the organizers are filmmakers and understand the importance of promoting individual films\, giving filmmakers post-screening Q&A\, and opportunity to meet other filmmakers and fans. \n\n\n\nFright-B-Wary FF is at the Clinton Street Theater (220 seats)\, Portland OR\, home of the longest running screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show (without interruption during covid). \n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of the festival\, participants can purchase a ticket to the midnight screening of Rocky Horror. (Ticketing for Rocky Horror is handled by Clinton Street Theater and is not a part of Fright-B-Wary.) \n\n\n\nFilm directors of selected short and feature films will receive one complimentary festival pass for all films screening during the festival. \n\n\n\nFilm directors of features will have a short Q&A session following their screening. Film directors of shorts will have a combined Q&A session following all shorts screenings. \n\n\n\nAwards are determined by a panel of avid horror film aficionados. The audience awards will be determined by QR code survey. All awards will be announced at the end of the festival.

SUMMARY:Love & Basketball
DESCRIPTION:Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) are two childhood friends who both aspire to be professional basketball players. Quincy\, whose father\, Zeke (Dennis Haysbert)\, plays for the Los Angeles Clippers\, is a natural talent and a born leader. Monica is ferociously competitive but sometimes becomes overly emotional on the court. Over the years\, the two begin to fall for each other\, but their separate paths to basketball stardom threaten to pull them apart. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood\n Year: 2000\n Country: United States\n Runtime: 127 minutes

SUMMARY:Pressure (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Tony is an ordinary boy\, the son of immigrants of the UK’s Windrush generation. Torn between his parents\, who insist that with hard work and trying hard to fit in he will succeed\, and his brother\, an organizer and anti-racist activist\, he tries to carve his own way. \n\n\n\nWhen the political reality of systemic racism in white London continually interferes however\, his disillusionment leads him to his own kind of engagement\, and his own conclusions. PRESSURE was the masterful directorial debut of Horace Ové\, and the first feature film by a Black director in the UK\, but its frank scenes of police brutality led to its being banned for several years. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Horace Ové\n Year: 1976\n Country: UK\n Runtime: 136 minutes

SUMMARY:Chasing The Line
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1976 and this is the story of Franz Klammer\, “The Kaiser” and the most famous downhill race in the history of the sport. Barely 22\, Franz Klammer finds himself at the “eye of the storm” when he shows up for the men’s downhill competition at the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. It was the most watched ski race in the history of the sport with over 25 million watching on ABC in the United States alone. In Austria it was a national holiday and all eyes were glued to the TV. \n\n\n\nSince the previous season the charismatic newcomer has won virtually every race. The pressure from the media and the public and the hopes of an entire nation are off the scales. His sponsor is pushing him to switch equipment right before the competition\, the weather is getting steadily worse\, and his toughest rivals know that Franz has to do better than just a flawless run. Franz senses that he has to find his own path and that only the love of his life can give him the strength to do that. This is the most important race of his life in which he skis a line that nobody even thought was possible\, which made him a legend of the sport\, to this day. \n\n\n\nPacked with thrilling race sequences and set over several days leading up to the contest\, this passionate film explores Klammer’s journey in forging his own identity as an athlete. Director Andreas Schmied’s feel-good biopic provides a highly entertaining look behind the scenes of professional sports and shows Klammer as a rebel against the commercialization of skiing. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Andreas Schmied\n Year: 2021\n Country: Austria\n Runtime: 100 minutes

After sensing a supernatural presence from his deceased father\, Joel becomes compelled to visit his cousin in New York. But shortly after arriving\, they become embroiled in a series of mysterious homicides of local men\, all of whom were last seen in the company of a mysterious and beautiful woman played by Cynthia Bond (RUBY). \n\n\n\nBeautifully photographed by Ernest Dickerson (DO THE RIGHT THING) and starring Kadeem Hardison (A DIFFERENT WORLD\, I’M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA) and Samuel L. SUMMARY:Ganja & Hess
DESCRIPTION:Flirting with the conventions of blaxploitation and horror\, Bill Gunn’s revolutionary independent film Ganja & Hess is a highly stylized and utterly original treatise on sex\, religion\, and African American identity. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) stars as anthropologist Hess Green\, who is stabbed with an ancient ceremonial dagger by his unstable assistant (director Bill Gunn)\, bestowing upon him the blessing of immortality… and the curse of an unquenchable thirst for blood. When the assistant’s beautiful and outspoken wife Ganja (Marlene Clark) comes searching for her missing husband\, she and Hess form an unexpected partnership. Together\, they explore just how much power blood holds. \n\n\n\nLater recut and released in an inferior version\, this new restoration represents the original release\, restored by The Museum of Modern Art with support from The Film Foundation\, and mastered in HD from a 35mm negative. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Bill Gunn\n Year: 1973\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 110 minutes

SUMMARY:Quilombo
DESCRIPTION:This historical saga is a stirring fusion of folklore\, political impact and dynamic story-telling\, realized in vibrant tropical colors and set to the pulsing beat of Gilberto Gil’s musical score. \n\n\n\nAfter the slave revolt of 1641\, groups of enslaved Black Brazilians escaped to mountainous jungle strongholds where they formed self-governing communities in a region dubbed “Quilombo dos Palmares\,” and considered by historians to be “undoubtedly the largest fugitive community to have existed in Brazil.” The people there developed a society and government that derived from a range of Central African sociopolitical models\, and a reflection of the diverse ethnic origins of its inhabitants. \n\n\n\nThis 1984 film directed by Carlos Diegues—who previously directed a similar film\, which was shelved for nearly a decade due to the 1964 military coup—is the chronicle of the most famous of these communities which flourished for several decades under the reign of the legendary chieftain Ganga Zumba. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Carlos Diegues\n Year: 1984\n Country: Brazil\n Runtime: 119 minutes
