SUMMARY:The Unlikely Story of the Lesbians of First Friday
DESCRIPTION:Film will be followed by a Q&A with Producer Kathryn L Beranich and special guests \n\n\n\n\nIn the early 1980’s a disparate group of lesbians living in the Bible Belt of Southwestern Virginia somehow found each other and birthed a vibrant community called First Friday. In an era when homosexuals were reviled\, the women of First Friday created safe and fun-filled space that framed the social lives of rural and displaced urban lesbians. Their antics were legendary and their events were not to be missed. \n\n\n\nTHE UNLIKELY STORY OF THE LESBIANS OF FIRST FRIDAY is a nugget of lesbian history mined from the peaks and valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains and told through the voices and anecdotes of women who were there. \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/361556351

SUMMARY:Life on Tape (Bilder (m)einer Mutter)
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Portland German Film Festival. \n\n\n\nA seemingly entirely normal childhood in the 80s\, captured on countless video cassettes. On them a family in which each one plays their own role. But there’s a shadow on everyday life. \n\n\n\nWith his camera the father calmly documents how in between Christmas celebrations and school events the mother becomes more and more of a shadow of herself. At first she disappears from the recordings\, later on from the family all together. Father\, brother and sister are left and the family construct crumbles. \n\n\n\nWith her film the director challenges her family to break their decades-long silence concerning the loss of the mother. A diary is found\, as well as the father’s old super 8-recordings\, in which the mother still smiled into the camera lovingly. We emerge into the life story of Gaby\, who dreams of leaving the Bavarian small town and her old school parents as a teenager. \n\n\n\nDespite the revolutionary cliché of the 70s\, marriage is the only logical way to independence for the couple. The climate of the time\, torn between emancipation and a conservative way of though\, rubs off on the biography of the young woman. Images from society and politics show plenary chambers filled by men and planes with no female pilots in sight. Gabi struggles with the realization of her dreams while her husband lives out a successful career. \n\n\n\nThe camera joins a woman on her tragic life’s path\, who ultimately stumbles over her role as mother\, which she never fully took on. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Melanie Lischker\n Year: 2021\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 78 minutes

SUMMARY:Robinson's Garden
DESCRIPTION:On a drunken walk home\, bohemian drug-dealer Kumi (Kumiko Ota) discovers an abandoned building on the outskirts of Tokyo. Attracted by the vast untapped space rampant with luxuriant vegetation\, she promptly sells all of her belongings and retreats from the world. She carves an island for herself out of the sprawling concrete squat\, now free to grow cabbage and express herself in any way she pleases. \n\n\n\nThis film offers a stark contrast to the sights of financial prosperity brought forth by the films of the Economic Bubble era. Lensed by Tom DiCillo (Living in Oblivion\, Johnny Suede)\, it instead shares much in common with the No Wave films the cinematographer pioneered alongside Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise). An unsung\, anticapitalist masterwork. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Masashi Yamamoto\n Year: 1987\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 119 minutes

SUMMARY:Umbrellas of Cherbourg
DESCRIPTION:An angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter\, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic\, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria\, the two lovers must grow up quickly. \n\n\n\nExquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors\, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand\, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jacques Demy\n Year: 1964\n Country: France\, West Germany\n Runtime: 91 minutes

SUMMARY:Young Girls of Rochefort
DESCRIPTION:Jacques Demy followed up The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with another musical about missed connections and second chances\, this one a more effervescent confection. Twins Delphine and Solange\, a dance instructor and a music teacher (played by real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac)\, long for big-city life; when a fair comes through their quiet port town\, so does the possibility of escape. \n\n\n\nWith its jazzy Michel Legrand score\, pastel paradise of costumes\, and divine supporting cast (George Chakiris\, Grover Dale\, Danielle Darrieux\, Michel Piccoli\, and Gene Kelly)\, The Young Girls of Rochefort is a tribute to Hollywood optimism from sixties French cinema’s preeminent dreamer. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jacques Demy\n Year: 1967\n Country: France\n Runtime: 126 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZFK8svwtxA&ab_channel=criterioncollection

DESCRIPTION:Please note: the January 17th screening will be shown with English language captions. If you would like to see the film without captions\, please attend the screening on Friday\, Jan. 20. \n\n\n\n\nThis explosive work about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh is the epitome of the sensuous style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. SUMMARY:The Happiness of the Katakuris
DESCRIPTION:From Takashi Miike\, the prolific director of genre milestones AUDITION and ICHI THE KILLER\, comes THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS—a movie that can best be described as THE SOUND OF MUSIC meets DAWN OF THE DEAD! \n\n\n\nGuests are turning up dead at a peaceful country inn owned by the Katakuris family. To keep bad word of mouth from spreading\, the Katakuris chop up and bury the guests. But that’s only the beginning of their problems. Featuring grotesque stop motion animation\, surreal musical numbers\, and gore-lusting zombies\, THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS stands tall as one of the most unique\, bizarre\, and satisfying horror-comedies ever made. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Takashi Miike\n Year: 2001\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 113 minutes

SUMMARY:World of Henna Film Screening & Morocco Film Fundraiser

From the henna wallahs on the colorful and lively streets\, to traditional henna application methods in the home\, and of course\, the sumptuousness of the incomparable Indian wedding. \n\n\n\nWorld of Henna is the first feature length documentary film series to capture the story of henna and the differences and similarities between cultures using henna since ancient times. The film won the Portland Filmmakers award at the 2021 Portland Film Festival! \n\n\n\nOur first fundraiser event helped cover the costs of our driver and translator as we ventured through the desert to capture the world of Moroccan henna last March. We are now fundraising for post production costs including sound mastering\, coloring\, musical score\, release costs\, and the multitude of other costs involved in independent film production. \n\n\n\nIf you would like to see the film from the comfort of your own home\, it is currently available online to rent now at https://worldofhennadocumentary.com • all proceeds from rentals will also be helping to fund the production of the next film.

SUMMARY:Buena Vista Social Club
DESCRIPTION:Traveling from the streets of Havana to the stage of Carnegie Hall\, this revelatory documentary captures a forgotten generation of Cuba’s brightest musical talents as they enjoy an unexpected encounter with world fame. The veteran vocalists and instrumentalists collaborated with American guitarist and roots-music champion Ry Cooder to form the Buena Vista Social Club\, playing a jazz-inflected mix of cha-cha\, mambo\, bolero\, and other traditional Latin American styles\, and recording an album that won a Grammy and made them an international phenomenon. \n\n\n\nIn the wake of this success\, director Wim Wenders filmed the ensemble’s members—including golden-voiced Ibrahim Ferrer and piano virtuoso Rubén González—in a series of illuminating interviews and live performances. The result is one of the most beloved documentaries of the 1990s\, and an infectious ode to a neglected corner of Cuba’s pre-revolutionary heritage. \n\n\n\n$1 from every ticket will go towards Music Portland’s grant fund. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Wim Wenders\n Year: 1999\n Country: Germany\, Cuba\, United States\, United Kingdom\, France\n Runtime: 105 minutes

SUMMARY:Descending the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Doors @ 6:30 / Movie @ 7:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortland Psychedelic Society (PPS) will present a screening of DESCENDING THE MOUNTAIN\, a tender film exploring psilocybin and the nature of consciousness by Maartje Nevejan \n\n\n\nAll eyes are on Oregon during this psychedelic renaissance as the first state to provide psilocybin services with the implementation of Measure 109\, and the most recent news around the Shroom House exposé. As a part of its organizational mission\, PPS aims to reduce confusion and misinformation around these topics. This film screening is one way the community group is facilitating inclusive space for psychedelic integration\, education\, and research. \n\n\n\nWhat happens when you administer psilocybin to experienced Zen meditators? A neuroscientist and a Zen master carry out a double-blind experiment on a sphinxlike mountain in Switzerland. Their goal: to examine the nature of consciousness. \n\n\n\n“These substances are not for the sick only\, they belong in the hands of meditation” (Albert Hofmann) \n\n\n\nExactly fifty years after the ban on psychedelics\, a group of Zen meditators – who have never used any psychedelic substances before – are given psilocybin on the last day of a 5-day retreat. Half the group receives a placebo. Mystical experiences are induced through a combination of deep meditation and psilocybin\, a psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms. \n\n\n\nThis scientific experiment\, which was published in Nature magazine in 2020\, may lift the controversy that has clouded the realm of psychedelics for far too long. Scientist Franz Vollenweider and Zen master Vanja Palmers descend from the mountain of bliss to teach us how we can integrate mysticism into our day-to-day life. \n\n\n\nDESCENDING THE MOUNTAIN is a mesmerizing testimony of inner climate change that shows us how psilocybin could create a revolution in improving mental health and strengthen our connection with our environment.

SUMMARY:Year 01
DESCRIPTION:Armed only with the slogan “Quit Everything\,” the people of France walk out of their jobs—and never return. Labor and money are abolished. Production stops. Consumption stops. Markets stop. Governments stop. Now people work only to fulfill their needs\, and use only what they need. Consumer goods are museum pieces\, the earth is a common land and garden\, and wage labor is a barbaric\, faintly remembered past. \n\n\n\nSomewhere\, counter-revolutionaries gather stacks of money\, now useless paper\, hoping one day it will again be charged with significance and elevate them to the status of lords. This is a report from the first year of a liberated world! \n\n\n\nJacques Doillon’s YEAR 01 (with contributing pieces by Left Bank luminaries Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch) is a serio-comic Utopia\, a series of imaginative sketches based on the philosophies behind the tumult of May ’68 and the Situationist International. Imagine a future! \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jacques Doillon\, Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch\n Year: 1973\n Country: France\n Runtime: 90 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/qPG3VoX5ECE
