SUMMARY:Desert Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first film was groundbreaking upon its 1986 release: a love story about two women\, produced and directed by a woman. In the 1959-set film\, an adaptation of a beloved novel by Jane Rule\, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno to file for divorce\, but winds up catching the eye of someone new\, the younger free spirit Cay (Patricia Charbonneau)\, touching off a slow seduction that unfolds against the breathtaking desert landscape. \n\n\n\nWith smoldering chemistry between its two leads\, an evocative jukebox soundtrack\, and vivid cinematography by Robert Elswit\, Desert Hearts beautifully exudes a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Donna Deitch\n Year: 1986\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Harry Smith's Film #18: Mahagonny
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker\, anthropologist\, painter\, and musicologist Harry Smith worked on Film #18 Mahagonny\, his final film\, for over ten years and considered it his magnum opus. His cinematic transformation of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s caustically satirical opera is an allegory that explores human needs and desires amid the rituals of daily life in New York City. \n\n\n\nThe film is a collage composed of various film genres\, intercutting portraits of important avant-garde figures such as Patti Smith\, Allen Ginsberg\, Marty Balin\, and Jonas Mekas\, New York City landmarks\, and Smith’s visionary animation.  \n\n\n\nThis is an ultra-rare opportunity to experience the long form work of the eccentric that brought us the Anthology of American Folk Music. \n\n\n\nJoin us for the opportunity to hear from Harry Smith’s assistant\, Rani Singh of the Harry Smith Archives\, as we screen Harry Smith’s Mahagonny\, one of the most legendary underground films of all time.Check out Harry Smith: Portland’s Prodigal Son’s other events Saturday\, June 15\, 7:30 PM @ Hollywood Theatre – Harry’s short films with live musical accompaniment curated by Mississippi Records\, $15; and Sunday\, June 16\, 4:00 PM @ Turn! Turn! Turn! for Harry Smith and the PNW.

SUMMARY:Grey Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter\, high-society dropouts\, and reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis. The two manage to thrive together amid the decay and disorder of their East Hampton\, New York\, mansion\, making for an eerily ramshackle echo of the American Camelot. \n\n\n\nAn impossibly intimate portrait\, this 1976 documentary by Albert and David Maysles\, codirected by Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer\, quickly became a cult classic and established Little Edie as a fashion icon and philosopher queen. \n\n\n\nThis screening will also feature the short film MATINEE BABY (2024)\, directed by visiting Rocky Horror host Thom Hilton and filmed right here at The Clinton Street Theater! \n\n\n\n \n Director: David Maysles\, Albert Maysles\, Ellen Hovde\, Muffie Meyer\n Year: 1976\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 95 minutes

SUMMARY:BYE BYE LOVE (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Two outsider youths in Shinjuku\, Tamura and Giiko\, turn a chance encounter fighting the cops into a crime spree on the lam\, with the alluring magical hope of escaping the narrow confines of a world that has cast them aside. BYE BYE LOVE is a brilliant\, poetical take on Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou\, with a trans woman at its center. \n\n\n\nLong believed lost\, this queer Bonnie & Clyde-meets-the children of Revlon & Marx was discovered in a warehouse in 2018\, filling in one of the great mysteries of trans cinema\, and revealing a masterpiece that provides a copestone for the end of Japan’s era of radical cinema. \n\n\n\n*Screened in Japanese with English-language subtitles.* \n\n\n\nTickets from the canceled January show will be honored during this screening.

SUMMARY:TREASURE ISLAND (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:“My story begins with a misunderstanding…” says young Jonathan\, who falls asleep watching a popular adventure TV show\, and falls into a dream world of mysterious strangers\, intrigues\, and incomprehensible games. A world where he is Jim Hawkins from Robert Louis Stevenson’s TREASURE ISLAND! One of Chilean Surrealist Raul Ruiz’s dearest ambitions was to adapt the childrens’ classic for film\, and so he did\, with money from a big name American distributor and instructions not to deviate from the text. He deviated from all of it. Starring Anna Karina\, Jean-Pierre Leaud\, Martin Landau\, and pop singer Sheila\, Ruiz’s TREASURE ISLAND is a masterfully labyrinthine surrealist metatext\, and a full dynamite-charged brain-blown deconstruction of children’s literature and adventure cinema\, in a free-flowing logic of media and dreams.
