SUMMARY:Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
DESCRIPTION:Immediately following Hunter Thompson’s death in 2005\, a near spontaneous and unhinged wake was staged at the Clinton St. Theater. Whiskey and beer flowed\, the audience screeched\, and the host almost fell off the stage. Films were shown\, words were read and a gonzo spirit was much celebrated. In subsequent years\, the focus turned to a birthday celebration for Hunter\, featuring documentaries\, signature beverages and special guests. \n\n\n\nIn that spirit\, come and celebrate the return of the weird and wild birthday celebration for famed gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson at the CST\, as we raise a glass to what would have been his 87th trip around the sun. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Terry Gilliam’s psychedelic nightmare adaptation\, a vintage documentary about Hunter in the 1980s\, along with a host of surprises and tributes. \n\n\n\nBuy the ticket. Take the ride. \n\n\n\nRes Ipsa Loquitur! \n\n\n\nHosted by Aaron Colter and Greg Hamilton. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Terry Gilliam\n Year: 1998\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 118 minutes

SUMMARY:DEAD MOUNTAINEER'S HOTEL (1979) (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Police Inspector Glebsky answers an anonymous distress call from a remote mountain hotel\, but finds the place untroubled when he arrives. However when an avalanche snows him in\, he gets to know the hotel’s strange guests a little better\, and something—or many things—are not quite right… are they terrorists? Robots? Aliens?! \n\n\n\nThis stylish glam-inflected\, spaced-out\, sci-fi neo-noir is a weird and wild mystery yarn based on a novel by famed Soviet sci-fi writers Boris and Arkady Strugatsky\, and features an amazing ambient space-rock soundtrack by Estonian synth pioneer Sven Grunberg!

SUMMARY:Fantastic Planet
DESCRIPTION:Nothing else has ever looked or felt like director René Laloux’s animated marvel—a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam\, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). \n\n\n\nAfter Terr\, kept as a pet since infancy\, escapes from his gigantic child captor\, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie\, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes\, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence. \n\n\n\n \n Director: René Laloux\n Year: 1973\n Country: France\, Czechoslovakia\n Runtime: 71 minutes

SUMMARY:AMPHIBIAN MAN (1962) (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Stories grow about a strange Sea Devil haunting the seas surrounding a Mexican fishing village. The Devil is Ichthyander\, a youth given gills who rules the underwater world. This hopeless\, and hopelessly gorgeous naif falls for Gutiere\, a fisherman’s daughter. So he makes way for terra firma\, and clashes with the hostile world of the land dwellers. \n\n\n\nA Soviet Jules Verne-esque tale touching close to Beauty and the Beast and Edward Scissorhands\, AMPHIBIAN MAN is not just a gorgeous and fun sci-fi sea romp\, its a surprising and poignant story of love and difference.

SUMMARY:Warm Blood
DESCRIPTION:Set in the underbelly of 1980s Modesto\, California\, Warm Blood uses the real-life diary of a teenage runaway named Red (newcomer Haley Isaacson) returning home to find her father. In his narrative feature debut\, director Rick Charnoski’s history as a skate video director informs the frenetic storytelling style\, as he combines Red’s nihilist musings with a collage of documentary and B-movie meta-narratives that paint a seedy picture of life on the outskirts of town. \n\n\n\nTalk-radio bits and punk music underscore the auditory cacophony of doom\, while frequent Kelly Reichardt collaborator Christopher Blauvelt (First Cow\, The Bling Ring) lends his immersive\, naturalist lens shooting on gritty 16mm film. While Red searches the streets\, a constant foreboding presence looms around the chemically toxic river polluting the town. Via a cable-access news reporter interviewing the local residents about its impact\, Charnoski infuses today’s growing apathy around the insurmountable nature of our man-made ecological disasters into this raw\, politically subversive tale. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Rick Charnoski\n Year: 2022\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 86 minutes

SUMMARY:REVOLUTIONS HAPPEN LIKE REFRAINS: The Films of Nick Deocampo (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Oliver is a drag superstar in Manila\, whose brilliant performances of the “spider-man” have made her a sensation\, even as she struggles to provide for her extended family in the waning days of Marcos. Speaking of which\, she is later caught up in the People Power Revolution in 1986\, where queers proudly marched to dismantle the dictatorship. \n\n\n\nDirector Nick Deocampo’s radical documentary explored the intersection of gender\, sexuality\, and radical politics in the Philippines in lovingly crafted\, poetic documents exploring queer Manila\, revolutionary aspirations\, and his own identity as a gay man and a left wing filmmaker. \n\n\n\nTwo documentaries\, OLIVER (1983) and REVOLUTIONS HAPPEN LIKE REFRAINS IN A SONG (1987)\, following Oliver are included\, as well as other rare work by Deocampos.
