SUMMARY:NIGHTMAREWAVE: Yugoslavian Animation (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Yugoslavian Animation\, mostly situated in the world famous Zagreb Film studio\, distinguished itself for its adult-orientated content. Sharply cynical\, erotic\, and focussing on themes of alienation and violence\, animators employed a wide array of styles\, often abstract and derived from modernist painting. \n\n\n\nThis collection presents some darker selections from animators such as Zlatko Bourek\, Vatroslav Mimica\, Aleksandar Marks\, Vladimir Jutriša\, and many more of Zagreb’s most talented visionaries!

SUMMARY:Invincible Czars: Live Score Phantom of the Opera (1925)
DESCRIPTION:The Invincible Czars will bring their signature blend of eclectic instrumentation\, adventurous arrangements and sense of emotional depth to this 100-year-old classic with their new\, tastefully modern soundtrack\, performing it live with the film in art house cinemas across the US and Canada in 2025.  \n\n\n\nThe Czars’ Phantom of the Opera soundtrack is the culmination of nearly a year of meticulous composition\, recording\, and collaboration. The group drew inspiration from the film’s gothic visuals and haunting narrative to craft a score using their primary instruments: piano\, violin\, electric guitar/bass\, organ\, flute\, drums and bass clarinet. They create a live experience so immersive that it’s easy to forget the music is being played live at times!

SUMMARY:Echoes of the Grunge Age
DESCRIPTION:Special premiere of a new film from Spider Moccasin\, divided between narration and music videos\, about the local Portland music scene in the 1990s at venues like Satyricon\, X-Ray and La Luna\, using paper cutouts and hand-drawn animation. \n\n\n\nThe film is less of a documentary and more of a performance artist memoir from the perspective of an unsigned insider who didn’t make it big\, but made it happen anyway. SUMMARY:MAGIC & ENIGMA: THE ANIMATION OF PRIIT PARN (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A tiny man living under a stove terrifies and seduces a neglected housewife. A boy spends his life running around the globe\, afraid of the moon. A cloistered elite idles in a land of light\, color\, and consumer pleasures\, but must confront a separate world of darkness behind a door. These are some of the visions in the absurd existential dreamscapes of Estonian animator Priit Parn. \n\n\n\nEschewing the elegant stylings of Soviet animation of the time\, Parn opted for a surreal style that could be ugly and disturbing\, but even more varied and meticulous. This program includes his masterpieces HOTEL E and BREAKFAST ON THE GRASS\, along with many other rare treats from his career.

SUMMARY:UNFIT: The Tale of One Pregnant Teen in the Bible Belt before Women Had Choice
DESCRIPTION:In the decades between World War II and Roe v. Wade\, an astounding 1.5 million girls and young women were sent to maternity homes and coerced into relinquishing their babies. Lani Jo Leigh was one of those girls. \n\n\n\nIn 1971\, it was the Age of Aquarius and a time of sexual freedom\, yet in Moore\, OK\, sex\, drugs\, and rock & roll were still the devil’s handiwork. In the repressed fundamentalist culture of her small hometown\, Lani Jo struggled with the “sin” of her sexuality. When she learned that she was pregnant\, she was given one option–banishment to a maternity home in New Orleans. While most girls were sent away for the third trimester\, Lani Jo spent six months at Sellers Baptist Home for Unwed Mothers. UNFIT tells the story of her time there–a time of despair\, rage\, betrayal\, and abandonment. With 24 high school and college age girls resideing at the Home at any one time\, it is also the story of friendship and genuine caring told with humor and pathos. \n\n\n\nNow that women’s reproductive rights are once again fueling a divisive national debate\, UNFIT provides a poignant\, heartbreaking and personal look into our nation’s grim history when abortion was illegal\, sex education was almost non-existent\, and birth control was tightly restricted.

SUMMARY:Pom Poko
DESCRIPTION:In this brilliant and often overlooked Studio Ghibli masterpiece from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Isao Takahata\, the forests are filled with groups of magical tanuki\, mischievous raccoon-like animals from Japanese folklore that are capable of shape-shifting from their standard raccoon form to practically any object. \n\n\n\nThe tanuki spend their days playing idly in the hillsides and squabbling over food – until the construction of a huge new Tokyo suburb clears the nearby forest and threatens their way of life. In an effort to defend their home\, the tanuki learn to transform into humans and start playing tricks to make the workers think the construction site is haunted\, ending in a spectacular night-time spirit parade\, with thousands of ghosts\, dragons and other magical creatures descending on the city — in an abundance of fantastical characters that would not be matched on screen by Studio Ghibli until Spirited Away. \n\n\n\nA portion of ticket sales will benefit the nonprofit organization Bark\, which defends and protects the Mt. Hood National Forest. Screened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Isao Takahata\n Year: 1994\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 119 minutes
