SUMMARY:SEX CHANGE (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Maria José is a young trans woman living in a small town outside of Barcelona. Her chauvinistic father resists his daughter’s feminine nature and attempts to indoctrinate her into the ways of traditional manhood. But Maria José runs away to Barcelona and meets another trans woman\, a cabaret actress named Bibi (played by trans actress Bibiana Fernández). She begins to make her journey toward living her life authentically. \n\n\n\nCatalonian Anarchist Vicente Aranda’s SEX CHANGE cut through decades of exploitation and cliches to make this frank\, researched\, and sympathetic portrait. \n\n\n\nCW: Brief domestic violence\, transition narrative.

SUMMARY:The Color of Pomegranates
DESCRIPTION:A breathtaking fusion of poetry\, ethnography\, and cinema\, Sergei Parajanov’s masterwork overflows with unforgettable images and sounds. The film’s tapestry of folklore and metaphor based on Armenian culture\, told through the story of the eighteenth-century troubadour Sayat-Nova\, departed from the realism that dominated the Soviet cinema of its era\, leading authorities to block its distribution. \n\n\n\nParajanov was a closeted bisexual\, which exposed him to increased legal scrutiny from Soviet authorities over his personal life\, his films\, and political involvement surrounding Ukrainian nationalism. In December 1973\, he was arrested in Kyiv\, and was accused of homosexuality\, sodomy\, and propagation of pornography. He was sentenced to five years in a hard labor camp despite international outcry from artists such as Andrei Tarkovsky\, Robert De Niro\, Francis Ford Coppola\, Martin Scorsese\, Jean-Luc Godard\, François Truffaut\, Luis Buñuel\, Federico Fellini\, and John Updike. Today\, his films have inspired a new generation of filmmakers and musicians\, including Madonna\, R.E.M.\, and Lady Gaga. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Sergei Parajanov\n Year: 1969\n Country: Soviet Union\n Runtime: 78 minutes

SUMMARY:Union the Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of the award-winning documentary UNION! \n\n\n\nUNION chronicles the extraordinary efforts of an unlikely group of warehouse workers\, including Chris Smalls\, as they launch a grassroots union campaign at an Amazon fulfillment center in Staten Island\, New York. \n\n\n\nProceeds from this viewing go directly to Strike For Our Rights’ strike fund\, supporting striking workers fighting for living wages and equity\, like those in this film. \n\n\n\nHere’s what some striking workers have said about our work: \n\n\n\n“The strike assistance impacted my life in a huge way. It gave me some relief and hope that I could make it. I don’t have family so I have no one to ask for support and having this as a resource is beyond amazing. Words can’t really describe how it affected me\, but it truly was life saving.” – Kristin F. (IATSE) \n\n\n\n“Because of your support I was able to stay current on my rent that month.” – Jess (IAW) \n\n\n\n“Please if you can spare anything to help assist with the strike fund it would be greatly appreciated. Being on strike is such a scary time in life. I’m currently on strike and my stress level is sky high. I’m a single parent with no other income.” – L.S. (CWA) \n\n\n\n“Unless you’ve been through a strike\, you don’t know what it’s like. It’s mentally and physically challenging\, every bit of support helps.” – Mr. Jones (Local 36g) \n\n\n\nStrike For Our Rights is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to support\, organize\, and promoting striking as a means of advocating for justice\, equity\, and systemic change. SUMMARY:SKINSHOW
DESCRIPTION:Risen From The Grave…Emerging From the Deep…Crawling\, Creeping Horrors…Hell-Bent on Freedom at any Cost! \n\n\n\nBackstage at a neon-lit cabaret\, two inhuman performers prepare for their entrances: Frankenstein’s Monster and The Creature from The Black Lagoon cycle through their dressing room as a normal night of work slides into a grasp for connection\, a storm of vicious self-scrutiny\, and euphoric self-expression.  \n\n\n\nIn an original performance that weaves together expressive movement\, soliloquy\, and B-Movie camp\, performers and writers R.L. Routh and Claire Elizabeth Aldridge dissect queer identity\, sapphic yearning\, and dysphoria through the lens of monsterdom. Underscored with a soundscape by designer Kora Link and projections by Taz Coffey\, SKINSHOW is an unforgettable new perspective on the horrors of being human. \n\n\n\nBasement Stair Collective is a Portland-based theatre company creating immersive new works through a collaborative\, design- forward process\, delving into the dark corners of the human experience to shed light on the spaces between grief and joy\, the flesh and the soul\, and the personal and the political. SUMMARY:The Harney Way
DESCRIPTION:The Harney Way is a 30-minute documentary that explores the collaborative spirit in the Harney Basin of Southeastern Oregon\, where ranchers and conservationists explore a basin-wide vision and actions that conserve wet meadow habitats in perpetuity and in turn support flood irrigation\, agricultural activities\, health and survival of bird populations\, and the Harney Basin economy. \n\n\n\nThe unique\, high desert hydrology of the area\, sometimes flooding\, sometimes dry\, calls for highly adaptive responses from wildlife\, plants\, and humans. An important stop on the Pacific Flyway\, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding private lands call for careful management. Through the voices and activities of leading conservationists\, ranching families\, The Burns Paiute Tribe\, and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge\, we are immersed in the world of Steens Mountain and the Silvies and Donner Und Blitzen watersheds. This collaborative approach provides community optimism that this complex landscape can be maintained into the future in support of both diverse bird populations and the livelihoods of rural families and communities. \n\n\n\nThe film is dedicated to Conservationist Bob Sallinger\, a major voice in the collaborative effort to integrate social\, economic\, and ecological values to support wetlands\, streams\, flood-irrigated meadows\, emergent marshes\, and other wetland types of the Harney Basin.   \n\n\n\nFollowing the film\, learn more about the Harney Basin Wetland Collaborative and Friends of Malheur Refuge’s on going work in the Harney Basin and meet Bird Conservation Oregon’s first Bob Sallinger Fellowship awardee.

SUMMARY:Desert Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Donna Deitch’s swooning and sensual first film was groundbreaking upon its 1986 release: a love story about two women\, produced and directed by a woman. In the 1959-set film\, an adaptation of a beloved novel by Jane Rule\, straitlaced East Coast professor Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) arrives in Reno to file for divorce\, but winds up catching the eye of someone new\, the younger free spirit Cay (Patricia Charbonneau)\, touching off a slow seduction that unfolds against the breathtaking desert landscape. \n\n\n\nWith smoldering chemistry between its two leads\, an evocative jukebox soundtrack\, and vivid cinematography by Robert Elswit\, Desert Hearts beautifully exudes a sense of tender yearning and emotional candor. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Donna Deitch\n Year: 1986\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:BYE BYE LOVE (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Two outsider youths in Shinjuku\, Tamura and Giiko\, turn a chance encounter fighting the cops into a crime spree on the lam\, with the alluring magical hope of escaping the narrow confines of a world that has cast them aside. BYE BYE LOVE is a brilliant\, poetical take on Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou\, with a trans woman at its center. \n\n\n\nLong believed lost\, this queer Bonnie & Clyde-meets-the children of Revlon & Marx was discovered in a warehouse in 2018\, filling in one of the great mysteries of trans cinema\, and revealing a masterpiece that provides a copestone for the end of Japan’s era of radical cinema. \n\n\n\n*Screened in Japanese with English-language subtitles.*

SUMMARY:The Watermelon Woman
DESCRIPTION:Cheryl Dunye made cinematic history with her debut\, the first American feature to be directed by a Black lesbian as well as an incisive\, humorous critique of classic Hollywood’s racist stereotypes. \n\n\n\nDunye plays an eponymous video store employee and burgeoning filmmaker who sets out to make a documentary on the Watermelon Woman (Lisa Marie Bronson)\, an actress who specialized in “mammy” roles for Hollywood productions of the 30s and 40s. As Cheryl uncovers the Watermelon Woman’s identity she not only learns about a secret behind-the-scenes interracial romance but also begins one of her own with Diana (Guinevere Turner)\, a white woman who arouses the ire of Cheryl’s best friend Tamara (Valerie Walker). A landmark of the New Queer Cinema that testifies to the power of excavating legacies of oppression and in the process creates a progressive legacy of its own. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Cheryl Dunye\n Year: 1996\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 90 minutes

SUMMARY:The People vs. Agent Orange
DESCRIPTION:Special screening presented by the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club.  \n\n\n\nThe Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. Today\, the world over\, a primary chemical of the notorious defoliant controls weeds in farming\, forestry\, parks\, along railbeds and roadways\, and even in children’s playgrounds. The herbicide can wreak havoc on the human genome\, causing deformities and deadly cancers.  \n\n\n\nAfter decades of struggle and tragic personal losses\, two heroic women are leading a worldwide movement that has raised awareness of the plague being caused by Agent Orange and the herbicides that have evolved from it. Their shared goal is to hold the chemical manufacturers accountable. For seven years\, Tran To Nga pressed a lawsuit in a French court against the American chemical industry for poisoning her and her children during the war in Vietnam.  \n\n\n\nIn America\, Carol Van Strum spent several decades collecting a huge trove of internal corporate documents exposing the knowing production of toxic herbicides and its use among civilian populations.  \n\n\n\nIncriminating documents disappear. Activists are threatened. A helicopter technician secretly films the contamination of reservoirs. After half a century of denials and obfuscation\, a massive industry-wide cover-up continues. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Alan Adelson\, Kate Taverna\n Year: 2020\n Country: France\, United States\n Runtime: 87 minutes

SUMMARY:Orlando\, My Political Biography
DESCRIPTION:Taking Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando: A Biography as its starting point\, academic virtuoso turned filmmaker Paul B. Preciado fashioned a documentary as a personal essay\, historical analysis\, and social manifesto. For almost a century\, Woolf’s eponymous hero/heroine has inspired readers for their gender fluidity across physical and spiritual metamorphoses over a 300-year lifetime. \n\n\n\nPreciado casts a diverse cross-section of more than twenty trans and non-binary individuals in the role of Orlando as they perform interpretations of scenes from the novel\, weaving into Woolf’s narrative their own stories in the fight for global trans rights. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Paul B.
