SUMMARY:YEAR 01 (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Armed only with the slogan “Quit Everything\,” the people of France walk out of their jobs—and never return. Labor and money are abolished. Production stops. Consumption stops. Markets stop. Governments stop. Now people work only to fulfill their needs\, and use only what they need. Consumer goods are museum pieces\, the earth is a common land and garden\, and wage labor is a barbaric\, faintly remembered past. Somewhere\, counter-revolutionaries gather stacks of money\, now useless paper\, hoping one day it will again be charged with significance and elevate them to the status of lords. This is a report from the first year of a liberated world! Jacques Doillon’s YEAR 01 (with contributing pieces by Left Bank luminaries Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch) is a serio-comic Utopia\, a series of imaginative sketches based on the philosophies behind the tumult of May ’68 and the Situationist International. Imagine a future!

SUMMARY:The Last Class
DESCRIPTION:The Last Class is a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich teaching his final course and reflecting on a period of immense transformation\, personally and globally. It is a love letter to education. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service\, best-selling books\, and viral social media posts\, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Now\, after over 40 years and an extraordinary 40\,000 students\, Reich is preparing for his last class.  \n\n\n\nOver the course of the film\, Reich confronts the impending finality\, and his own aging\, with increasing candor\, introspection\, and\, ultimately\, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics\, he uses his class\, “Wealth and Poverty\,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s\, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society.  \n\n\n\nOne thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus\, the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. His belief in the next generation’s ability to take on the fight is inspiring.

SUMMARY:SEX CHANGE (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Maria José is a young trans woman living in a small town outside of Barcelona. Her chauvinistic father resists his daughter’s feminine nature and attempts to indoctrinate her into the ways of traditional manhood. But Maria José runs away to Barcelona and meets another trans woman\, a cabaret actress named Bibi (played by trans actress Bibiana Fernández). She begins to make her journey toward living her life authentically. \n\n\n\nCatalonian Anarchist Vicente Aranda’s SEX CHANGE cut through decades of exploitation and cliches to make this frank\, researched\, and sympathetic portrait. \n\n\n\nCW: Brief domestic violence\, transition narrative.

SUMMARY:The Color of Pomegranates
DESCRIPTION:A breathtaking fusion of poetry\, ethnography\, and cinema\, Sergei Parajanov’s masterwork overflows with unforgettable images and sounds. The film’s tapestry of folklore and metaphor based on Armenian culture\, told through the story of the eighteenth-century troubadour Sayat-Nova\, departed from the realism that dominated the Soviet cinema of its era\, leading authorities to block its distribution. \n\n\n\nParajanov was a closeted bisexual\, which exposed him to increased legal scrutiny from Soviet authorities over his personal life\, his films\, and political involvement surrounding Ukrainian nationalism. In December 1973\, he was arrested in Kyiv\, and was accused of homosexuality\, sodomy\, and propagation of pornography. He was sentenced to five years in a hard labor camp despite international outcry from artists such as Andrei Tarkovsky\, Robert De Niro\, Francis Ford Coppola\, Martin Scorsese\, Jean-Luc Godard\, François Truffaut\, Luis Buñuel\, Federico Fellini\, and John Updike. Today\, his films have inspired a new generation of filmmakers and musicians\, including Madonna\, R.E.M.\, and Lady Gaga. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Sergei Parajanov\n Year: 1969\n Country: Soviet Union\n Runtime: 78 minutes

SUMMARY:Union the Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of the award-winning documentary UNION! \n\n\n\nUNION chronicles the extraordinary efforts of an unlikely group of warehouse workers\, including Chris Smalls\, as they launch a grassroots union campaign at an Amazon fulfillment center in Staten Island\, New York. \n\n\n\nProceeds from this viewing go directly to Strike For Our Rights’ strike fund\, supporting striking workers fighting for living wages and equity\, like those in this film. \n\n\n\nHere’s what some striking workers have said about our work: \n\n\n\n“The strike assistance impacted my life in a huge way. It gave me some relief and hope that I could make it. I don’t have family so I have no one to ask for support and having this as a resource is beyond amazing. Words can’t really describe how it affected me\, but it truly was life saving.” – Kristin F. (IATSE) \n\n\n\n“Because of your support I was able to stay current on my rent that month.” – Jess (IAW) \n\n\n\n“Please if you can spare anything to help assist with the strike fund it would be greatly appreciated. Being on strike is such a scary time in life. I’m currently on strike and my stress level is sky high. I’m a single parent with no other income.” – L.S. (CWA) \n\n\n\n“Unless you’ve been through a strike\, you don’t know what it’s like. It’s mentally and physically challenging\, every bit of support helps.” – Mr. Jones (Local 36g) \n\n\n\nStrike For Our Rights is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to support\, organize\, and promoting striking as a means of advocating for justice\, equity\, and systemic change. SUMMARY:SKINSHOW
DESCRIPTION:Risen From The Grave…Emerging From the Deep…Crawling\, Creeping Horrors…Hell-Bent on Freedom at any Cost! \n\n\n\nBackstage at a neon-lit cabaret\, two inhuman performers prepare for their entrances: Frankenstein’s Monster and The Creature from The Black Lagoon cycle through their dressing room as a normal night of work slides into a grasp for connection\, a storm of vicious self-scrutiny\, and euphoric self-expression.  \n\n\n\nIn an original performance that weaves together expressive movement\, soliloquy\, and B-Movie camp\, performers and writers R.L. Routh and Claire Elizabeth Aldridge dissect queer identity\, sapphic yearning\, and dysphoria through the lens of monsterdom. Underscored with a soundscape by designer Kora Link and projections by Taz Coffey\, SKINSHOW is an unforgettable new perspective on the horrors of being human. \n\n\n\nBasement Stair Collective is a Portland-based theatre company creating immersive new works through a collaborative\, design- forward process\, delving into the dark corners of the human experience to shed light on the spaces between grief and joy\, the flesh and the soul\, and the personal and the political. SUMMARY:BITE! The Gaz Girls of Paris (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:An offshoot of the Homosexual Front For Revolutionary Action that emerged from the 1968 uprisings\, Les Gazolines were a group of glitter-bombing\, cop car flipping trans women that were a spectacular part of the era’s underground fabric. \n\n\n\nThis program includes two works from the Paris Underground film scene built around members of the group\, such as trans icons Marie France and Hélène Hazera: PARADISE LOST (1974\, original subtitles by Church of Film) and THE ADVENTURES OF SYLVIA COUSKI (1974). \n\n\n\nThese Warhol-esque works are incredible glimpses into a Paris in the throes of punks\, protests\, and Le Palace.
