SUMMARY:Aguirre\, the Wrath of God
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-16th century\, after annihilating the Incan empire\, Pizarro leads his army of conquistadors over the Andes into the heart of the most savage environment on earth in search of the fabled City of Gold\, El Dorado. As the soldiers battle starvation\, Indians\, the forces of nature\, and each other\, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) aka “The Wrath of God\,” is consumed with visions of conquering all of South America and revolts\, leading his own army down a treacherous river on a doomed quest into oblivion. \n\n\n\nFeaturing a seething\, controlled performance from Klaus Kinski\, this masterpiece from director Werner Herzog is an unforgettable portrait of madness and power. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Werner Herzog\n Year: 1972\n Country: West Germany\, Mexico\, Peru\n Runtime: 94 minutes

SUMMARY:Desert of Namibia
DESCRIPTION:Oregon premiere of a new film from Japan! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\n21-year-old Kana (rising star Yuumi Kawai) works a disaffected job at a beauty salon\, where she bristles against the beauty expectations placed on women her age. Her erratic mood and default to self-destruct impacts all of her relationships\, as moments of levity erupt into violence and optimism simmers to despair. Bored with her slavish boyfriend\, she finds another; the novel excitement of it all soon devolving into a volatile predicament. Uncommitted and trapped in her own life\, Kana slowly makes her way towards the inner desert of her emotions. \n\n\n\nAlternating between claustrophobic blocking\, ample zooms and expressive whip-pans brought together by dryly comedic editing and an intense actor’s direction\, the sophomore effort from director Yoko Yamanaka (Amiko) provides a frank and dynamic examination of womanhood and mental health in contemporary Japan. Inspired by the female protagonists of Yasuzo Masumura (Blind Beast) as much as the intense Cassavetes/Rowlands collaboration\, Yamanaka breaks out with a work of stark confrontational honesty. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to bring this new film to Oregon for the first time following its North American debut in New York\, L.A.\, and Montreal. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Yoko Yamanaka\n Year: 2024\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 137 minutes

But as she pours her energy into creating viral videos\, Tamaki learns a devastating truth—the arthouse cinema she treasures is set to close its doors on the same day as Kagerasu’s next live show! \n\n\n\nWe’re very excited to partner with Japanese film distributor Cinemago to bring this new title to the United States as it’s selling out theaters in Shinjuku\, Ikebukuro\, and Osaka. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Takashi Okamoto\n Year: 2025\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 82 minutes

A wild cult hit in Japan\, this newly-restored\, unsung gem returns to the big screen for the first time in decades. SUMMARY:What's Up Connection
DESCRIPTION:Portland premiere of the new restoration! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nWhen Hong Kong teenager Chi Gau Shin (Tse Wai-Kit) wins a trip to Japan\, he begins a journey that takes him from his small fishing village to Tokyo by way of Kamagasaki—the so-called slums of Osaka. On the way\, he connects with a barely competent tour guide named Kumi and the shapeshifting\, loudmouthed and lovable thief Akane. \n\n\n\nUpon returning home with this merry band of schemers\, Gau Shin finds his family of resourceful counterfeiters on the verge of expropriation: a multinational conglomerate led by a ruthless Japanese developer has found the village\, and is determined to raze it to build the new center of world trade! \n\n\n\nA breathless\, kaleidoscopic evocation of a specific pan-Asian cultural experience as the 1990s drew near\, this rare bilingual Japan–Hong Kong coproduction unfolds as part unhinged globalization mini-epic\, part fringe documentary\, as director Masashi Yamamoto brings his project—of capturing beauty and resilience in the margins of capital—to its maximalist apex with a score by avant-garde trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. \n\n\n\nOur previous screening of Masashi Yamamoto’s Robinson’s Garden quickly sold out\, and so we’re very excited to present the punk rock pioneer’s subsequent work to Portland for the first time. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. As a special treat SakéOne will be offering limited complimentary sake tastings to the first few people through the doors and selling a selection of bottles to take home\, including their Naginata\, G50\, Moonstone Plum\, and Momokawa Pearl varieties\, along with Murai Family Sugidama imported from Hachinohe.SakéOne is Oregon’s only sake brewery and the nation’s largest importer of Japanese sake\, leading the way in specializing in American Craft Premium sake with passion\, tradition\, and innovation. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Masashi Yamamoto\n Year: 1990\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 121 minutes

SUMMARY:Wolf Children
DESCRIPTION:Free screening of the new 4K restoration! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films.   \n\n\n\nCollege student Hana falls in love with a “wolf man” and together they have two half-human\, half-wolf children\, Ame and Yuki. The young family’s happy but humble life comes to an abrupt end when the father is tragically killed during a hunt. After struggling to raise her children in the busy city\, Hana boldly decides to move to a dilapidated house in the countryside\, in hopes that her children may one day decide their own path to happiness – whether “human” or “wolf.” \n\n\n\nThis heart-wrenching modern fairy tale is a staggering work of beauty and emotion from director Mamoru Hosoda. Rich with gorgeous animation and set to a poignant musical score\, Wolf Children is a sweeping tale about self-discovery and the bonds of family. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nTakohachi\, Portland’s premier Japanese music ensemble\, will perform a vibrant 15-minute set to open the final weekend of the Hanabi Film Festival. SUMMARY:PEASANTS OF THE SECOND FORTRESS (1971)(Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In the fields just outside of Tokyo\, thousands of student protesters joined the peasantry to fight the building of the Narita International Airport. Constructing massive earthworks\, tunnels\, towers and fortresses\, together they waged pitched battles against hordes of riot police and corporate workers sent to seize the land. Embedded among them was the incredible Ogawa Production team\, who lived for years in the fortresses of the Sanrizuka Struggle. \n\n\n\nA jaw-dropping achievement\, a spectacular monument to humanity in revolt\, PEASANTS OF THE SECOND FORTRESS depicts the revolt against state oppression with its cameras directly in the fray\, amid the fires\, the hoses\, the batons\, and the clash of activists against monstrous police.

SUMMARY:Typhoon Club
DESCRIPTION:Portland premiere of the new 4K restoration! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nWinner of the Grand Prix at the first Tokyo International Film Festival in 1985\, Typhoon Club is widely regarded as the seminal film of director Shinji Somai’s career. A work of raw\, elemental power\, it follows an ensemble of junior high students in a provincial town\, beset by a summer-y malaise as a typhoon looms. When the storm makes landfall\, the teens find themselves holed up in their school unsupervised\, while another classmate (Yuki Kudo) disappears alone on a harrowing trek to the big city. Set adrift in a world suddenly unmoored\, the students let loose their pent-up angst and burgeoning passions in a series of propulsive\, phantasmic scenes—part apocalypse\, part utopia—as the deluge rages on into the night. Observed in daring long takes\, director Somai gives material form to the students’ turbulent inner lives. When day breaks and the rains let up\, the youngsters open their eyes to a world in ruins—or a world renewed. The 10th best Japanese film of all time\, according to Japan’s Kinema Junpo poll. \n\n\n\n“I can say with absolute conviction that no Japanese filmmaker makes a film without being conscious of Shinji Somai’s existence. That is how significant Somai’s presence is in the history of Japanese cinema… For anyone who wants to see a movie that has the power to change and sustain your life\, I urge you to see Somai’s films.” -Ryusuke Hamaguchi\, director of Drive My Car \n\n\n\n“Maybe the last great master of Japanese film history.” -Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, director of Cure \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Shinji Sômai\n Year: 1985\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 115 minutes

Now\, it’s up to photographer Hondo to uncover the conspiracy while dealing with go-go dancing ninjas and bullets made of chewing gum. \n\n\n\nAn ultra-stylish\, candy-coated amusement park ride in the form of a movie\, this overlooked crime-noir delight is an essential big screen experience. Don’t think about the plot too much\, this is pure pop-art fun! Directed by Seijun Suzuki protégé Yasuharu Hasebe in his first feature film before he went on to direct more exploitative “pink” films such as the Alleycat Rock series. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Yasuharu Hasebe\n Year: 1966\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 86 minutes

SUMMARY:The Friends
DESCRIPTION:Portland premiere of the new 4K restoration! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nIt’s the dog days of summer vacation. Up to no good\, a group of three wily young friends discover a decrepit house and the old coot who lives there all alone. They begin to spy on him\, expecting to find his corpse when he dies. But soon\, as they learn the sad story behind his present wretchedness\, the boys develop a touching bond with the old-timer. They even help replant his overgrown garden. \n\n\n\nShinji Somai’s follow-up to his acclaimed Moving is a comic spectacle of movement and play and a stirring contemplation on time’s ravages and delights. Evoking other preteen anarchist masterpieces like Typhoon Club (also screening at this year’s Hanabi Film Festival) and P.P. Rider\, the film is a testament to Somai’s singular ability to enter into the unruly world of children\, using his liberated long takes to stir up the energies of a raucous ensemble of first-time performers. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to bring a brand new restoration of this beloved Japanese film to Portland on the same weekend that it debuts in North America at New York’s Lincoln Center before receiving a wider release. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Shinji Sômai\n Year: 1994\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 113 minutes

They begin to build a happy life together until traces of Asako’s past start to resurface. \n\n\n\nReleased before his international breakthrough\, the Academy Award-nominated Drive My Car\, Hamaguchi’s adaptation is based on the novel Netemo Sametemo by Tomoka Shibasaki and first debuted in Oregon at the 2019 Portland International Film Festival. SUMMARY:RED ARMY/PFLP: DECLARATION OF WORLD WAR (1971)
DESCRIPTION:A snapshot in time of a resistance\, and an alliance: The Japanese Red Army (JRA) and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In Spring of 1971\, Fusako Shigenobu moved the guerrilla Red Army from Japan to Lebanon to fight for the Palestinian resistance\, and months later filmmakers Masao Adachi and Koji Wakamatsu followed her to record. \n\n\n\nPart explosive agit-prop\, part moody landscape document of a people living in anticipation of violence and revolution\, RED ARMY/PFLP: DECLARATION OF WORLD WAR is perhaps the most notorious newsreel ever made. After its release and self-distribution\, Masao Adachi abandoned film and joined the Red Army himself in Lebanon for 28 years.

SUMMARY:The Crazy Family
DESCRIPTION:Portland premiere of the new\, director-approved restoration from the original negatives! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nHaving recently relocated his family from a cramped apartment in Tokyo\, to a spacious suburban home\, Katsuhiko Kobayashi is hellbent on keeping his picture-perfect idea of middle-class success alive. But\, when the new house suddenly begins to rot from the inside\, Katsuhiko’s mind deteriorates with it and his family soon join him in their own rapid descent into madness. \n\n\n\nAll notions of what it means to be a normal family are dropped into a blender and warped to hell in Gakuryū Ishii’s classic 1984 deconstruction of the nuclear household. From the cyberpunk godfather of Crazy Thunder Road and August in the Water\, this underrated gem falls somewhere between the masterful work of Yasujirō Ozu and Takashi Miike. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Gakuryû Ishii\n Year: 1984\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 106 minutes

SUMMARY:Woman in the Dunes
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nStarting our Hanabi Film Festival is one of the great international art-house sensations. \n\n\n\nAdapted by Kōbō Abe from his 1962 novel of the same name\, Eiji Okada plays an amateur entomologist who has left Tokyo to study an unclassified species of beetle that resides in a remote\, vast desert. When he misses his bus back to civilization\, he is persuaded to spend the night in the home of a young widow (Kyoko Kishida) who lives in a hut at the bottom of a sand dune. What results is one of cinema’s most bristling\, unnerving\, and palpably erotic battles of the sexes\, as well as a nightmarish depiction of everyday Sisyphean struggle anchored by a haunting score from Tōru Takemitsu. \n\n\n\nHiroshi Teshigahara is the first person of Asian descent to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director\, and his masterpiece has been hailed by everyone from Andrei Tarkovsky to Roger Ebert as one of the greatest films of all time. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Hiroshi Teshigahara\n Year: 1964\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 147 minutes

SUMMARY:Blessings Movie Night Presents: Mother\, I Am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You.

An improvised live score will accompany the film.
