SUMMARY:Fright-B-Wary Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Presented by QwerkiflixWe’re programming off beat films; films that mainstream festivals ignore or don’t appreciate. We’re looking for dark\, esoteric\, nightmarish stories. Our audience will be coming in from a dark\, cold\, rainy winter day and we want to creep them out. \n\n\n\nAlthough this is the first year of this festival\,  the organizers are filmmakers and understand the importance of promoting individual films\, giving filmmakers post-screening Q&A\, and opportunity to meet other filmmakers and fans. \n\n\n\nFright-B-Wary FF is at the Clinton Street Theater (220 seats)\, Portland OR\, home of the longest running screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show (without interruption during covid). \n\n\n\nAt the conclusion of the festival\, participants can purchase a ticket to the midnight screening of Rocky Horror. (Ticketing for Rocky Horror is handled by Clinton Street Theater and is not a part of Fright-B-Wary.) \n\n\n\nFilm directors of selected short and feature films will receive one complimentary festival pass for all films screening during the festival. \n\n\n\nFilm directors of features will have a short Q&A session following their screening. Film directors of shorts will have a combined Q&A session following all shorts screenings. \n\n\n\nAwards are determined by a panel of avid horror film aficionados. The audience awards will be determined by QR code survey. All awards will be announced at the end of the festival.

SUMMARY:Belly
DESCRIPTION:Ever since they were kids\, Sincere (Nas) and Buns (DMX) have lived life close to the edge\, doing whatever it takes to survive. As adults\, they build up their kingdom of crime on drug dealing and robbery. But Sincere grows weary of the criminal lifestyle and joins a black Muslim religious group. Buns\, on the other hand\, sinks deeper into criminality and faces serious prison time. The cops offer him a deal—assassinate the head of the Muslim group\, and he will go free. \n\n\n\nWritten and directed by Hype Williams\, one of the most celebrated and prolific music video directors of all time (Wu-Tang Clan\, The Notorious B.I.G.\, OutKast\, Tupac Shakur\, Jay-Z\, A Tribe Called Quest\, Missy Elliott\, DMX\, TLC\, Dr. Dre\, Busta Rhymes\, Snoop Dog\, Future\, Jack White\, Beyoncé\, et al.)\, BELLY (1998) was plagued by production issues and seen as a dud by critics despite making millions from its relatively limited budget\, much of which was spent on the dramatic opening sequence. Magic Johnson even refused to screen it at his theater chain. \n\n\n\nToday\, the film still has one of the biggest Rotten Tomatoes divides (20% critics\, 87% audience) in history. But it’s now considered a cult film\, seen in a new light by audiences almost 30 years later. Critic Khris Davenport recently wrote that Williams “blazed a trail in Black cinema that some filmmakers are only just now starting to understand and build upon.” \n\n\n\n \n Director: Hype Williams\n Year: 1998\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 92 minutes

SUMMARY:Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back
DESCRIPTION:Free screening\, followed by a Q&A discussion with Selma\, Dean and Ponyboy from the movie. \n\n\n\n\nThis documentary follows queer Palestine liberation activists fighting against the “Rainbow Generations” pro-Israel propaganda tour in Seattle in 2012. \n\n\n\nSelma Al-Aswad is a Palestinian community organizer\, ethnographer\, and researcher based in Seattle. She’s been actively engaged in Palestinian liberation organizing for the past 20 years and is currently a member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective. Ponyboy is an Armenian/South Asian trans artist\, now based in Portland\, OR\, who has been working in queer music and cultural activism for the past two decades. Dean Spade is a Seattle-based writer\, video maker and organizer whose work focuses on trans liberation\, and ending cops\, prisons\, borders and the US military. \n\n\n\nSubtitles + ASL interpretation\, theater is wheelchair accessible\, masks required. Please take a COVID test before coming. \n\n\n\nThis screening is taking place on unceded lands of Chinook and related tribes\, and they request support for recognition at ChinookJustice.org  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMore about Pinkwashing Exposed:\n\n\n\n“Pinkwashing” is a term activists have coined for when countries engaged in terrible human rights violations promote themselves as “gay friendly” to improve their public image. Israel is the country most famous for this strategy\, having initiated it as part of a rebranding campaign has been engaged in for the last decade. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, activists in the Pacific Northwestern region of the US responded to an Israeli Consulate-funded pinkwashing tour featuring Israeli gay and lesbian activists that was coming to the region. Local queer Palestine solidarity activists exposed the “Rainbow Generations” tour as pro-Israel propaganda and got some of the events\, including the tour’s centerpiece event hosted by the City of Seattle’s LGBT Commission\, cancelled. \n\n\n\nA significant backlash ensued involving the Seattle City Council and Seattle’s leading LGBT and HIV organizations. Through the inspiring story of these activists’ victory\, Pinkwashing Exposed explores how pinkwashing works and what local activists are doing to fight back. Pinkwashing Exposed was made in Seattle\, on Duwamish Land. The Duwamish are in a long fight for recognition by the US government. We can help by donating.

SUMMARY:The Story of a Three Day Pass
DESCRIPTION:Melvin Van Peebles’s edgy\, angsty\, romantic first feature could never have been made in America. Unable to break into a segregated Hollywood\, Van Peebles decamped to France\, taught himself the language\, and wrote a number of books in French\, one of which\, La permission\, would become his stylistically innovative feature debut. \n\n\n\nTurner (Harry Baird)\, an African American soldier stationed in France\, is granted a promotion and a three-day leave from base by his casually racist commanding officer and heads to Paris\, where he finds whirlwind romance with a white woman (Nicole Berger)—but what happens to their love when his furlough is over? \n\n\n\nChanneling the brash exuberance of the French New Wave\, Van Peebles creates an exploration of the psychology of an interracial relationship as well as a commentary on France’s contradictory attitudes about race that is playful\, sarcastic\, and stingingly subversive by turns\, and that laid the foundation for the scorched-earth cinematic revolution he would unleash just a few years later with Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Melvin Van Peebles\n Year: 1967\n Country: France\n Runtime: 87 minutes

SUMMARY:The Lost Letter (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A valorous\, strong and simple Cossack named Vasyl is given the arduous task of traveling across the wilderness and plains\, and (literally) to Hell and back\, to deliver an important petition for help to the Russian Empress Elizabeth. Based on an adventurous comedy by Nikolai Gogol\, Boris Ivchenko’s THE LOST LETTER was one the last and most striking films of the Ukrainian Poetic Cinema movement. Banned immediately by Soviet censors\, it’s a lost masterpiece of its time! \n\n\n\n \n Director: Borys Ivchenko\n Year: 1972\n Country: Soviet Union (Ukrainian SSR)\n Runtime: 70 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmu9hdYRc9c

SUMMARY:Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story
DESCRIPTION:Toody Cole will join us for a post-screening Q&A \n\n\n\n\nUndisputedly written into the annals of rock history and dedicated to the most sincere methods of the DIY ethos\, Northwest musicians Dead Moon (Andrew Loomis and Fred & Toody Cole) have intentionally cut out the bullshit\, and left the major labels and “commercial success” behind. Unknown Passage: The Dead Mood Story follows the band on the road and at home\, chronicling lifestyle rock and rollers who happen to also be small business owners and grandparents. \n\n\n\nBeginning with footage of a 14 year-old Deep Soul Cole\, Unknown Passage tells the history of one of the most reclusive bands through their various garage\, psych\, folk\, and punk rock incarnations. Today\, pressing their records at home\, in a house they built from the ground up\, Dead Moon run their own “frontier mini-mall\,” record label and music store\, while in their spare time “keep one gig ahead of a day job” by touring through the US and Europe-with the occasional 15-hour penny-slots casino pitstop. Here stands the triumph of a family of “old-west homesteaders” against corporate control and gracelessly growing old. \n\n\n\nUnknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story is Fred\, Toody & Andrew’s Dead Moon experience\, a culmination of their 40-year life in music and love.

SUMMARY:Year 01
DESCRIPTION:Armed only with the slogan “Quit Everything\,” the people of France walk out of their jobs—and never return. Labor and money are abolished. Production stops. Consumption stops. Markets stop. Governments stop. Now people work only to fulfill their needs\, and use only what they need. Consumer goods are museum pieces\, the earth is a common land and garden\, and wage labor is a barbaric\, faintly remembered past. \n\n\n\nSomewhere\, counter-revolutionaries gather stacks of money\, now useless paper\, hoping one day it will again be charged with significance and elevate them to the status of lords. This is a report from the first year of a liberated world! \n\n\n\nJacques Doillon’s YEAR 01 (with contributing pieces by Left Bank luminaries Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch) is a serio-comic Utopia\, a series of imaginative sketches based on the philosophies behind the tumult of May ’68 and the Situationist International. Imagine a future! \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jacques Doillon\, Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch\n Year: 1973\n Country: France\n Runtime: 90 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/qPG3VoX5ECE

SUMMARY:Descending the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Doors @ 6:30 / Movie @ 7:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortland Psychedelic Society (PPS) will present a screening of DESCENDING THE MOUNTAIN\, a tender film exploring psilocybin and the nature of consciousness by Maartje Nevejan \n\n\n\nAll eyes are on Oregon during this psychedelic renaissance as the first state to provide psilocybin services with the implementation of Measure 109\, and the most recent news around the Shroom House exposé. As a part of its organizational mission\, PPS aims to reduce confusion and misinformation around these topics. This film screening is one way the community group is facilitating inclusive space for psychedelic integration\, education\, and research. \n\n\n\nWhat happens when you administer psilocybin to experienced Zen meditators? A neuroscientist and a Zen master carry out a double-blind experiment on a sphinxlike mountain in Switzerland. Their goal: to examine the nature of consciousness. \n\n\n\n“These substances are not for the sick only\, they belong in the hands of meditation” (Albert Hofmann) \n\n\n\nExactly fifty years after the ban on psychedelics\, a group of Zen meditators – who have never used any psychedelic substances before – are given psilocybin on the last day of a 5-day retreat. Half the group receives a placebo. Mystical experiences are induced through a combination of deep meditation and psilocybin\, a psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms. \n\n\n\nThis scientific experiment\, which was published in Nature magazine in 2020\, may lift the controversy that has clouded the realm of psychedelics for far too long. Scientist Franz Vollenweider and Zen master Vanja Palmers descend from the mountain of bliss to teach us how we can integrate mysticism into our day-to-day life. \n\n\n\nDESCENDING THE MOUNTAIN is a mesmerizing testimony of inner climate change that shows us how psilocybin could create a revolution in improving mental health and strengthen our connection with our environment.

SUMMARY:Buena Vista Social Club
DESCRIPTION:Traveling from the streets of Havana to the stage of Carnegie Hall\, this revelatory documentary captures a forgotten generation of Cuba’s brightest musical talents as they enjoy an unexpected encounter with world fame. The veteran vocalists and instrumentalists collaborated with American guitarist and roots-music champion Ry Cooder to form the Buena Vista Social Club\, playing a jazz-inflected mix of cha-cha\, mambo\, bolero\, and other traditional Latin American styles\, and recording an album that won a Grammy and made them an international phenomenon. \n\n\n\nIn the wake of this success\, director Wim Wenders filmed the ensemble’s members—including golden-voiced Ibrahim Ferrer and piano virtuoso Rubén González—in a series of illuminating interviews and live performances. The result is one of the most beloved documentaries of the 1990s\, and an infectious ode to a neglected corner of Cuba’s pre-revolutionary heritage. \n\n\n\n$1 from every ticket will go towards Music Portland’s grant fund. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Wim Wenders\n Year: 1999\n Country: Germany\, Cuba\, United States\, United Kingdom\, France\n Runtime: 105 minutes

SUMMARY:Black Narcissus
DESCRIPTION:Please note: the January 17th screening will be shown with English language captions. If you would like to see the film without captions\, please attend the screening on Friday\, Jan. 20. \n\n\n\n\nThis explosive work about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh is the epitome of the sensuous style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. A group of nuns—played by some of Britain’s finest actresses\, including Deborah Kerr\, Kathleen Byron\, and Flora Robson—struggle to establish a convent in the Himalayas\, while isolation\, extreme weather\, altitude\, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. \n\n\n\nA darkly grand film that won Oscars for Alfred Junge’s art direction and Jack Cardiff’s cinematography\, Black Narcissus is one of the greatest achievements by two of cinema’s true visionaries. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Michael Powell\, Emeric Pressburger\n Year: 1947\n Country: United Kingdom\n Runtime: 100 minutes
