SUMMARY:Discovering Psychedelics: An Intro & Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:Doors @ 6:30 / Show @ 7:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurious about psychedelics\, but don’t know where to start? Join Portland Psychedelic Society for an evening of conversation with local experts as we break down the psychedelic basics.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll provide an approachable introduction to non-ordinary states of consciousness and psychedelic brain science. We’ll discuss the current psychedelic landscape in Oregon and what that means for you\, and provide tools and tips for preparation and integration. You’ll walk away with additional resources to further guide and support safe psychedelic exploration\, and with ways to stay plugged in to the psychedelic community. \n\n\n\nPerceptions of psychedelics are shifting as research continues to show their efficacy for improving mental health and facilitating healing and personal growth. The increase in public acceptance is especially true in Oregon\, where we are treading uncharted territory with the passage of Measures 109 and 110\, and psilocybin services launching this year. \n\n\n\nAnd while perceptions are shifting\, the stigmas still linger. What is true and what is myth? This event aims to demystify the world of psychedelics\, and to provide an educational platform and community resource center for those who are newer to the psychedelic space.  \n\n\n\nThrough short presentations by local experts and facilitated Q&A sessions\, we will cover 4 key topic areas: \n\n\n\n\n Psychedelic History & Policy\n\n\n\nAn Intro to Psychedelics and Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness\n\n\n\nPsychedelic Brain Science 101\n\n\n\nHarm Reduction\n\n\n\n\nDiscovering Psychedelics is the kick-off to a series of additional events and workshops hosted by PPS that will dive deeper into our 4 focus areas. \n\n\n\nCome join us as we gather to discover psychedelics together! \n\n\n\nPortland Psychedelic Society is a not-for-profit\, donation-based organization with a mission to create inclusive space and community for psychedelic integration\, education\, and research. \n\n\n\nThis event is informational only\, and Portland Psychedelic Society does not support or condone the solicitation or use of illegal substances.

SUMMARY:The Beaches of Agnès
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Agnès Varda Forever festival across March! Buy a series pass to save on all four films. \n\n\n\n\n“If we opened people up\, we’d find landscapes. If we opened me up\, we’d find beaches.” Originally intended to be Agnès Varda’s farewell to filmmaking\, this enchanting self-portrait\, made in her eightieth year\, is a freewheeling journey through her life\, career\, and artistic philosophy. \n\n\n\nRevisiting the places that shaped her—from the North Sea beaches of Belgium where she spent her childhood to the Mediterranean village where she shot her first film to the boardwalks of Los Angeles where she lived with her husband Jacques Demy—Varda reflects on a lifetime of creation and inspiration\, successes and setbacks\, heartbreak and joy. \n\n\n\nReplete with images of wonder and whimsy—the ocean reflected in a kaleidoscope of mirrors\, the streets of Paris transformed into an urban sand beach\, the filmmaker herself ensconced in the belly of a whale—The Beaches of Agnès is the record of a life lived fully and passionately in the name of cinema. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Agnès Varda\n Year: 2008\n Country: France\n Runtime: 110 minutes

DESCRIPTION:Wendy (Michelle Williams)\, a near-penniless drifter\, is traveling to Alaska in search of work\, and her only companion is her dog\, Lucy. Already perilously close to losing everything\, Wendy hits a bigger bump in the road when her old car breaks down in Oregon and she is arrested for shoplifting dog food. When she posts bail and returns to retrieve Lucy\, she finds that the dog is gone\, prompting a frantic search for her pet. Directed by Kelly Reichardt. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Kelly Reichardt\n Year: 2008\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 80 minutes

SUMMARY:A Woman on the Outside
DESCRIPTION:Growing up\, Kristal watched nearly every man in her life disappear to prison. She channeled that struggle into keeping families connected\, both as a social worker and with her van service that drives families to visit loved ones in far-off prisons. But when Kristal’s dad and brother return to Philly\, her happiness meets the realization that release doesn’t always mean freedom. \n\n\n\nPassionate\, funny and resilient\, Kristal remains determined to carve out a different future for herself and for her young nephew\, Nyvae. Part observational documentary\, part family album\, this film is a tender portrait of one family striving to love in the face of a system built to break them. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Zara Katz\n Year: 2022\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 85 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/725900136

SUMMARY:Daniah La Metisse & Other Tales of Love\, Death & the Sea (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A shorts and featurettes program of love\, death\, and the sea! Our headline film\, DAINAH LA DAINAH LA METISSE (1931) is an early masterpiece by French master Jean Gremillon. A strange\, stylized and alluring film\, DAINAH is a jazzy\, nightmarish poem about racial tension and sublimated colonial guilt\, set amidst the strange parties and magic-laced maskarades on an ocean liner. Also included will be Dmitri Kirsanoff’s haunting experimental narrative\, MENILMONTANT (1928)\, and Jean Epstein’s beautiful LE TEMPESTAIRE (1947).

SUMMARY:Jeanne Dielman\, 23\, quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles
DESCRIPTION:A singular work in film history\, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman\, 23\, quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles meticulously details\, with a sense of impending doom\, the daily routine of a middle-aged widow—whose chores include making the beds\, cooking dinner for her son\, and turning the occasional trick. In its enormous spareness\, Akerman’s film seems simple\, but it encompasses an entire world. Whether seen as an exacting character study or one of cinema’s most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time\, Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing\, compelling movie experiment\, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades. \n\n\n\nVoted the greatest film of all time in Sight & Sound’s once-a-decade poll. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Chantal Akerman\n Year: 1975\n Country: Belgium\, France\n Runtime: 201 minutes

SUMMARY:Mur Murs
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Agnès Varda Forever festival across March! Buy a series pass to save on all four films. \n\n\n\n\nAfter returning to Los Angeles from France in 1979\, Agnès Varda created this kaleidoscopic documentary about the striking murals that decorate the city. Bursting with color and vitality\, Mur Murs is as much an invigorating study of community and diversity as it is an essential catalog of unusual public art. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Agnès Varda\n Year: 1981\n Country: France\n Runtime: 82 minutes

SUMMARY:Smithereens
DESCRIPTION:Broke\, punk\, and ambitious! The low-budget breakout film by Susan Seidelman\, Smithereens is a snapshot of the dying East Village NYC punk scene in 1982 that takes you along like a down-and-out Nights of Cabiria. \n\n\n\nJoin New Jersey native Wren on her ham-fisted quest to become cool and influence people without actually trying. Shot (without permits) on the gorgeously dilapidated streets of early 80’s New York\, a time when being semi-washed up looked incredibly cool and broke artists (and poseurs) could live easy-sleazy in cheap flop apartments and still have cigarette money. \n\n\n\nRichard Hell plays Eric\, the one-hit-wonder punk dream boy that empirically sucks but is also irresistible for our young up-and-comer in comparison to recent city transplant and cornfed Midwest Paul.   \n\n\n\nSusan Berman gives an effectively endearing AND annoying performance; you still root for her success even though she’s deeply narcissistic\, a bit of a dummy\, and overall kind of a dick. \n\n\n\nSmithereens is an incredible example of guerilla filmmaking\, and one of the rare occasions in this decade where you get to see a story unfold through a hungry female lens. \n\n\n\nOne of the first American independent films to be selected to show in the main competition at Cannes. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Susan Seidelman\n Year: 1982\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 89 minutes

SUMMARY:Dead Mom Card
DESCRIPTION:Death is a way of life at Houlihan’s Funeral Home until a change in ownership uncovers links between privilege and entitlement in its buried legacy. \n\n\n\nThree funeral home employees—a white woman\, a Black man\, and a bi-racial gay man—must sort out who is in charge\, and why\, when the sudden death of the owner throws their lives in disarray. Their power struggles encompass misogyny\, racism\, and implicit bias. Along the way\, they encounter the profane\, the ridiculous\, and many forms of grieving. \n\n\n\nThis locally produced feature has Portland talent in front of and behind the camera. Settings in St. Johns\, North\, and Northeast Portland feature prominently. The soundtrack is a mix of folk/pop\, EDM\, traditional Irish tunes\, and hip hop originals by Q.Z. Tha Leader and Mic Capes. \n\n\n\nWritten\, directed & produced by Steve Perkins.

SUMMARY:Working Girls
DESCRIPTION:Sex work is portrayed with radical nonjudgment in Lizzie Borden’s immersive\, richly detailed look at the rhythms and rituals of society’s most stigmatized profession. \n\n\n\nInspired by the experiences of the sex workers Borden met while making her underground feminist landmark Born in Flames\, Working Girls reveals the textures of a day in the life of Molly (Louise Smith)\, a photographer working part-time in a Manhattan brothel\, as she juggles a steady stream of clients\, balances relationships with her coworkers with the demands of an ambitious madam\, and above all fights to maintain her sense of self in a business in which the line between the personal and the professional is all too easily blurred. \n\n\n\nIn viewing prostitution through the lens of labor\, Borden boldly desensationalizes the subject\, offering an empathetic\, humanizing\, often humorous depiction of women for whom this work is just another day at the office. \n\n\n\nNew 4K restoration by the Criterion Collection and UCLA Film & Television Archive in conjunction with Sundance Institute. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Lizzie Borden\n Year: 1986\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 91 minutes

SUMMARY:Harlan County USA
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kopple’s Academy Award–winning Harlan County USA unflinchingly documents a grueling coal miners’ strike in a small Kentucky town. With unprecedented access\, Kopple and her crew captured the miners’ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers\, local police\, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack—with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens\, Merle Travis\, Sarah Gunning\, and Florence Reece—the film is a heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Barbara Kopple\n Year: 1976\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 103 minutes

SUMMARY:Daguerréotypes
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Agnès Varda Forever festival across March! Buy a series pass to save on all four films. \n\n\n\n\nSpending most of her days at home following the birth of her son but curious as ever about the people and places that surrounded her\, Agnès Varda found inspiration for Daguerréotypes just outside her door: on Paris’s rue Daguerre\, where she had lived and worked since the 1950s. The director turns her camera on the business owners whose shops are the street’s lifeblood: bakers\, tailors\, butchers\, perfumers\, music-store clerks\, driving instructors\, and others\, who\, between the everyday rituals of their work\, talk of their lives\, relationships\, and dreams. Blending her photographer’s eye for still portraiture with her filmmaker’s gift for finding visual rhymes and resonances between images\, Varda reveals the rich social fabric of an entire world—all without leaving her block. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Agnès Varda\n Year: 1976\n Country: France\n Runtime: 80 minutes

SUMMARY:Daisies
DESCRIPTION:Maybe the New Wave’s most anarchic entry\, Věra Chytilová’s absurdist farce follows the misadventures of two brash young women. Believing the world to be “spoiled\,” they embark on a series of pranks in which nothing—food\, clothes\, men\, war—is taken seriously. Daisies is an aesthetically and politically adventurous film that’s widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Věra Chytilová\n Year: 1966\n Country: Czechoslovakia\n Runtime: 72 minutes

SUMMARY:Marguerite of the Night (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Tickets	\n\n\n\n\n\nOld Dr. Faust attends the opera\, a performance of his famous ancestor’s pact with the Devil. Actually\, the Devil is there too\, and has a deal for the old man… here we go again! Transported to a jazzy 50s milieu\, with towering expressionist set pieces\, immaculate eye-popping design\, and Yves Montand at his most\, well\, devilish–MARGUERITE DE LA NUIT was not just an update of the familiar legend\, it was a fond farewell to the golden age of French studio films with its high-brow art design and mega snappy veneer.
