SUMMARY:The Cow (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In a remote area of Iran almost untouched by the centuries\, Mashdi Hassan owns the village’s only cow. He cherishes the animal as his greatest love\, the source of all of his pride and happiness. But when nearby bandits target the village and Hassan’s cow\, he is overwhelmed by sympathy for the animal—until he himself is turned into a cow. \n\n\n\nTHE COW is widely considered the masterpiece of the Iranian New Wave\, a symbolic drama so beautiful that even the Ayatollah Khomeini would not ban it\, even as its author Gholām-Hossein Sā’edi was exiled. THE COW has been meticulously restored in Iran for the first time since its 1969 release\, so come see one of the greatest monuments in film history! \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ck4T4rAHU8

SUMMARY:Nightlife
DESCRIPTION:A wild comedy that launches at full speed\, Nightlife is an entertaining romp about the misadventures of friends lost in the Berlin night. On a night out bartender Milo (Elyas M‘Barek\, also in this year’s The Collini Case) meets the woman of his dreams Sunny (Palina Rojinski\, Welcome to Germany\, Grandparenting 101) in a fateful moment and arranges to go on a date. \n\n\n\nEverything seems to be running smoothly\, but when Milo’s flatmate and chaotic childhood friend Renzo (Frederick Lau\, also starring in The Perfect Secret) turns up\, the romantic evening escalates into a mad chase through the city’s nightlife pursued by some underworld thugs. However\, nothing will shake Milo and Sunny’s love if they can survive this date… \n\n\n\n \n Director: Simon Verhoeven\n Year: 2020\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 111 minutes

SUMMARY:A Colt is My Passport
DESCRIPTION:One of Japanese cinema’s supreme emulations of American noir\, Takashi Nomura’s A Colt Is My Passport is a down-and-dirty but gorgeously photographed yakuza film starring Joe Shishido as a hard-boiled hit man caught between rival gangs. Featuring an incredible\, spaghetti-western-style soundtrack and brimming with formal experimentation\, this is Nikkatsu at its finest. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Takashi Nomura\n Year: 1967\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 84 minutes

SUMMARY:Fallen Angels
DESCRIPTION:Lost souls reach out for human connection amidst the glimmering night world of Hong Kong in Wong Kar Wai’s hallucinatory\, neon-soaked nocturne. \n\n\n\nOriginally conceived as a segment of Chungking Express only to spin off on its own woozy axis\, this hyper-cool head rush plays like the dark\, moody flip side to Wong’s breakout feature as it charts the subtly interlacing fates of a handful of urban loners\, including a coolly detached hitman (Leon Lai) looking to go straight\, his business partner (Michelle Reis) who secretly yearns for him\, and a mute delinquent (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who wreaks mischief by night. \n\n\n\nSwinging between hardboiled noir and slapstick lunacy with giddy abandon\, Fallen Angels is both a dizzying\, dazzling city symphony and a poignant meditation on love\, loss\, and longing in a metropolis that never sleeps. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Wong Kar-wai\n Year: 1995\n Country: Hong Kong\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:Before the Revolution: Film & Poetry in Iran (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A collection of poetic pieces that launched the Iranian New Wave! This program includes a set of beautiful work from the Golestan Film Workshop\, the first independent film studio in Iran. \n\n\n\nEbrahim Golestan\, together with his creative partner the poet Forugh Farrokhzad\, created masterful\, subversive film poems such as A FIRE and THE HOUSE IS BLACK–transforming a towering inferno into a modern dragon\, a monster of modernization in the former\, and weaving a poem of existential compassion out of a leper colony in the latter. \n\n\n\nAlso included will be Golestan’s THE CROWN JEWELS OF IRAN\, with some of its censored elements restored. Lastly\, the French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse’s THE LOVERS WIND\, a beloved Iranian state production that resulted in Lamorisse’s death in a helicopter crash. Subtitles for the Lovers’ Wind by Church of Film! \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0vKqsi2aGs

SUMMARY:Black Boots\, Leather Whip
DESCRIPTION:During one of the most productive periods of his career\, writer/director Jess Franco (VAMPYROS LESBOS) resurrected the character of seedy private eye Al Pereira—portrayed here by key collaborator Antonio Mayans—for this hard-boiled erotic thriller. When down-on-his-luck Pereira is hired by a sultry client (Lina Romay) for a fast job\, he finds himself caught in a web of seduction\, murder\, blackmail\, polyamorous mayhem\, and a Sadomasochistic centerpiece that is jaw-droppingly extreme—even by Franco standards—in this postmodern neo-noir\, now fully uncut and restored from the original negative. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Jesús Franco\n Year: 1983\n Country: Spain\n Runtime: 89 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6uE9KkIUI4

SUMMARY:Detour (1945)
DESCRIPTION:From the gutters of Poverty Row came a movie that\, perhaps more than any other\, epitomizes the dark fatalism at the heart of film noir. As he hitchhikes his way from New York to Los Angeles\, a down-on-his-luck nightclub pianist (Tom Neal) finds himself with a dead body on his hands and nowhere to run—a waking nightmare that goes from bad to worse when he picks up the most vicious femme fatale in cinema history\, Ann Savage’s snarling\, monstrously conniving drifter Vera. \n\n\n\nWorking with no-name stars on a bargain-basement budget\, B auteur Edgar G. Ulmer turned threadbare production values and seedy\, low-rent atmosphere into indelible pulp poetry. Long available only in substandard public domain prints\, Detour haunts anew in its first major restoration. \n\n\n\nRestored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation in collaboration with Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique\, The Museum of Modern Art\, and the Cinémathèque Française. Restoration funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Edgar G. Ulmer\n Year: 1945\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 68 minutes

SUMMARY:The Savage Hunt of King Stakh (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In a dark\, ruinous manor on the borderlands of Belarus\, a young ethnographer arrives to study the legends of the Marsh Firs. There he finds the sordid mystery of a generational curse: spectral figures\, a Little Man and a Woman in Blue\, stalk the grounds\, while a ghost ride\, a hunt led by the long dead King Stakh\, terrorizes the gloomy country and claims many victims. \n\n\n\nTHE SAVAGE HUNT OF KING STAKH is a masterwork of atmospheric gothic ghastliness! Featuring the rarely seen full length cut of this film.

SUMMARY:Discovering Psychedelics: An Intro & Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:Doors @ 6:30 / Show @ 7:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurious about psychedelics\, but don’t know where to start? Join Portland Psychedelic Society for an evening of conversation with local experts as we break down the psychedelic basics.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll provide an approachable introduction to non-ordinary states of consciousness and psychedelic brain science. We’ll discuss the current psychedelic landscape in Oregon and what that means for you\, and provide tools and tips for preparation and integration. You’ll walk away with additional resources to further guide and support safe psychedelic exploration\, and with ways to stay plugged in to the psychedelic community. \n\n\n\nPerceptions of psychedelics are shifting as research continues to show their efficacy for improving mental health and facilitating healing and personal growth. The increase in public acceptance is especially true in Oregon\, where we are treading uncharted territory with the passage of Measures 109 and 110\, and psilocybin services launching this year. \n\n\n\nAnd while perceptions are shifting\, the stigmas still linger. What is true and what is myth? This event aims to demystify the world of psychedelics\, and to provide an educational platform and community resource center for those who are newer to the psychedelic space.  \n\n\n\nThrough short presentations by local experts and facilitated Q&A sessions\, we will cover 4 key topic areas: \n\n\n\n\n Psychedelic History & Policy\n\n\n\nAn Intro to Psychedelics and Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness\n\n\n\nPsychedelic Brain Science 101\n\n\n\nHarm Reduction\n\n\n\n\nDiscovering Psychedelics is the kick-off to a series of additional events and workshops hosted by PPS that will dive deeper into our 4 focus areas. \n\n\n\nCome join us as we gather to discover psychedelics together! \n\n\n\nPortland Psychedelic Society is a not-for-profit\, donation-based organization with a mission to create inclusive space and community for psychedelic integration\, education\, and research. \n\n\n\nThis event is informational only\, and Portland Psychedelic Society does not support or condone the solicitation or use of illegal substances.

SUMMARY:The Beaches of Agnès
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Agnès Varda Forever festival across March! Buy a series pass to save on all four films. \n\n\n\n\n“If we opened people up\, we’d find landscapes. If we opened me up\, we’d find beaches.” Originally intended to be Agnès Varda’s farewell to filmmaking\, this enchanting self-portrait\, made in her eightieth year\, is a freewheeling journey through her life\, career\, and artistic philosophy. \n\n\n\nRevisiting the places that shaped her—from the North Sea beaches of Belgium where she spent her childhood to the Mediterranean village where she shot her first film to the boardwalks of Los Angeles where she lived with her husband Jacques Demy—Varda reflects on a lifetime of creation and inspiration\, successes and setbacks\, heartbreak and joy. \n\n\n\nReplete with images of wonder and whimsy—the ocean reflected in a kaleidoscope of mirrors\, the streets of Paris transformed into an urban sand beach\, the filmmaker herself ensconced in the belly of a whale—The Beaches of Agnès is the record of a life lived fully and passionately in the name of cinema. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Agnès Varda\n Year: 2008\n Country: France\n Runtime: 110 minutes

SUMMARY:A Woman on the Outside
DESCRIPTION:Growing up\, Kristal watched nearly every man in her life disappear to prison. She channeled that struggle into keeping families connected\, both as a social worker and with her van service that drives families to visit loved ones in far-off prisons. But when Kristal’s dad and brother return to Philly\, her happiness meets the realization that release doesn’t always mean freedom. \n\n\n\nPassionate\, funny and resilient\, Kristal remains determined to carve out a different future for herself and for her young nephew\, Nyvae. Part observational documentary\, part family album\, this film is a tender portrait of one family striving to love in the face of a system built to break them. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Zara Katz\n Year: 2022\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 85 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/725900136

SUMMARY:Daniah La Metisse & Other Tales of Love\, Death & the Sea (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A shorts and featurettes program of love\, death\, and the sea! Our headline film\, DAINAH LA DAINAH LA METISSE (1931) is an early masterpiece by French master Jean Gremillon. A strange\, stylized and alluring film\, DAINAH is a jazzy\, nightmarish poem about racial tension and sublimated colonial guilt\, set amidst the strange parties and magic-laced maskarades on an ocean liner. Also included will be Dmitri Kirsanoff’s haunting experimental narrative\, MENILMONTANT (1928)\, and Jean Epstein’s beautiful LE TEMPESTAIRE (1947).

SUMMARY:Jeanne Dielman\, 23\, quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles
DESCRIPTION:A singular work in film history\, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman\, 23\, quai du Commerce\, 1080 Bruxelles meticulously details\, with a sense of impending doom\, the daily routine of a middle-aged widow—whose chores include making the beds\, cooking dinner for her son\, and turning the occasional trick. In its enormous spareness\, Akerman’s film seems simple\, but it encompasses an entire world. Whether seen as an exacting character study or one of cinema’s most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time\, Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing\, compelling movie experiment\, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades. \n\n\n\nVoted the greatest film of all time in Sight & Sound’s once-a-decade poll. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Chantal Akerman\n Year: 1975\n Country: Belgium\, France\n Runtime: 201 minutes

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Agnès Varda Forever festival across March! Buy a series pass to save on all four films. \n\n\n\n\nAfter returning to Los Angeles from France in 1979\, Agnès Varda created this kaleidoscopic documentary about the striking murals that decorate the city. SUMMARY:Smithereens
DESCRIPTION:Broke\, punk\, and ambitious! The low-budget breakout film by Susan Seidelman\, Smithereens is a snapshot of the dying East Village NYC punk scene in 1982 that takes you along like a down-and-out Nights of Cabiria. \n\n\n\nJoin New Jersey native Wren on her ham-fisted quest to become cool and influence people without actually trying. Shot (without permits) on the gorgeously dilapidated streets of early 80’s New York\, a time when being semi-washed up looked incredibly cool and broke artists (and poseurs) could live easy-sleazy in cheap flop apartments and still have cigarette money. \n\n\n\nRichard Hell plays Eric\, the one-hit-wonder punk dream boy that empirically sucks but is also irresistible for our young up-and-comer in comparison to recent city transplant and cornfed Midwest Paul.   \n\n\n\nSusan Berman gives an effectively endearing AND annoying performance; you still root for her success even though she’s deeply narcissistic\, a bit of a dummy\, and overall kind of a dick. \n\n\n\nSmithereens is an incredible example of guerilla filmmaking\, and one of the rare occasions in this decade where you get to see a story unfold through a hungry female lens. \n\n\n\nOne of the first American independent films to be selected to show in the main competition at Cannes. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Susan Seidelman\n Year: 1982\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 89 minutes
