SUMMARY:The Tall Shadows of the Wind (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Convinced that a scarecrow is throwing pebbles at him\, Abdollah draws a face on it and gives it his cap. But as random tragedies and strange circumstances beset the village\, it seems everyone in town is convinced that the scarecrow possesses supernatural powers. Alone in disavowing the influence of the spectre in the field\, Abdollah attempts to gather a resistance. \n\n\n\nTHE TALL SHADOW OF THE WINDS is a legendary piece of the Iranian New Wave that weaves revolutionary political allegory into shades of folk horror and uncanny surrealism. The film was released shortly after the Iranian Revolution and promptly banned. \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIUi4L3EK1o

SUMMARY:Polyester
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Happy Birthday John Waters celebration! \n\n\n\nFor his first studio picture\, filth maestro John Waters took advantage of his biggest budget yet to allow his muse Divine to sink his teeth into a role unlike any he had played before: Baltimore housewife Francine Fishpaw\, a heroine worthy of a Douglas Sirk melodrama. \n\n\n\nBlessed with a keen sense of smell and cursed with a philandering pornographer husband\, a parasitic mother\, and a pair of delinquent children\, the long-suffering Francine turns to the bottle as her life falls apart—until deliverance appears in the form of a hunk named Todd Tomorrow (vintage heartthrob Tab Hunter). \n\n\n\n \n Director: John Waters\n Year: 1986\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 86 minutes

SUMMARY:Multiple Maniacs
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Happy Birthday John Waters celebration! \n\n\n\nJohn Waters’ gloriously grotesque\, unavailable-for-decades second feature comes to theaters at long last\, replete with all manner of depravity\, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous moments. \n\n\n\nMade on a shoestring budget in Baltimore\, with Waters taking on nearly every technical task\, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion\, a traveling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam\, larger-than-life Divine\, who’s out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. \n\n\n\nStarring Waters’ beloved regular cast the Dreamlanders (including David Lochary\, Mary Vivian Pearce\, Mink Stole\, Edith Massey\, and Cookie Mueller)\, Multiple Maniacs is an anarchist masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of taste for decades. \n\n\n\n \n Director: John Waters\n Year: 1970\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:The Deer (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Ghodrat\, a wounded urban guerilla fighter\, returns to his childhood neighborhood to seek shelter from the police. He finds Seyed\, the man who taught him everything he knows about standing up for his principles and on behalf of the vulnerable–but Seyed is a shadow of his former self\, a hopeless addict and loser\, living in the slums. The unlikely reunion of the two friends forces Seyed to reflect on what has become of him\, while the police draw nearer to Ghodrat. \n\n\n\nTHE DEER is the most revolutionary film of the Iranian New Wave\, censored innumerable times and banned to this day in Iran. For the first time it has been restored to its full length and with its original ending! The ending rewritten and shot at the behest of the Pahlavi censors will also be included after the film for comparison.  \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEyGzIa_IIA

DESCRIPTION:Please note: the April 18th screening will be shown with English language captions. If you would like to see the film without captions\, please attend the screening on Saturday\, April 22. \n\n\n\n\nPart of our Happy Birthday John Waters celebration!

DESCRIPTION:Please note: the April 17th screening will be shown with English language captions. If you would like to see the film without captions\, please attend the screening on Saturday\, April 22. \n\n\n\n\nPart of our Happy Birthday John Waters celebration!

SUMMARY:Fast Break
DESCRIPTION:45th Anniversary screening of FAST BREAK dedicated to the memory of Portland Trail Blazer Radio Icon BILL SCHONELY. \n\n\n\nEvoking a cinéma vérité feel not found in most sports documentaries\, FAST BREAK examines the 1977 Trail Blazers in a surprisingly personal and compelling fashion. Inter-cutting excerpts from the 1977 playoff / championship season\, the film steps outside of the basketball court\, and into the everyday lives of the Trail Blazers\, as well as their coach Jack Ramsey. Whether it’s biking the Oregon coast with Bill Walton\, hosting a kids basketball camp with Dave Twardzik\, or joking with Maurice Lucas at the pool—FAST BREAK lets the players speak for themselves: about basketball\, life and playing in Portland. \n\n\n\nJoin us after the show for a Q&A with author / athlete LARRY COLTON who interviewed the team in FAST BREAK. We’ll also be remembering andsharing stories about The Schonz and how much he meant to Portland. \n\n\n\nHosted and moderated by film curator Greg Hamilton. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Don Zavin\n Year: 1978\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 107 minutes
