SUMMARY:The Others (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Alessandra and Flavia are two unbelievably fashionable partners who live a pop-art masterpiece of a flat. They want a child. And… that’s pretty much the plot. THE OTHERS is a unique entry in the Sapphic genre most notable for what it isn’t: No tales of debauchery\, corruption\, or tragedy. Just the quiet (did I say very fashionable yet?) lesbian couple next door building a family. This portrayal ironically attracted the attention and ire of the censors and condemned the film to obscurity.

SUMMARY:Neubau
DESCRIPTION:Summer in Brandenburg. Markus is torn between the love for his grandmothers in need of care and the longing for a different life in Berlin. A crowd of shimmering demons keeps appearing in his daydreams. An allusion to the queer chosen family that awaits him in the city and saves him from his loneliness. Markus’ boxes to move to the big city are packed. So\, when he falls in love with Duc things get even more complicated. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Johannes Maria Schmit\n Year: 2020\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 82 minutes

SUMMARY:Art & Pep
DESCRIPTION:The first state to decriminalize homosexuality\, Illinois was on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic\, anti-discrimination laws and marriage equality. But long before government officials would utter the words “HIV\,” it was gay bars that transformed into community centers and became ground zero in the fight. \n\n\n\nSidetrack opened in 1982 and with Art Johnston and Pepe Peña at the helm\, it went from a 900-square-foot windowless watering hole to a pillar of Chicago’s gay business district\, spanning over eight storefronts and multiple levels. Art and Pep have watched as the politicians who once would have them jailed now court the community for votes. The space has become a source of political and financial support for LGBTQ+ rights. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Mercedes Kane\n Year: 2022\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 88 minutes

SUMMARY:Sex Change (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Maria José is a young trans woman living in a small town outside of Barcelona. Her chauvinistic father resists his daughter’s feminine nature and attempts to indoctrinate her into the ways of traditional manhood. But Maria José runs away to Barcelona and meets another trans woman\, a cabaret actress named Bibi (played by trans actress Bibiana Fernández). She begins to make her journey toward living her life authentically. Catalonian Anarchist Vicente Aranda’s SEX CHANGE cut through decades of exploitation and cliches to make this frank\, researched\, and sympathetic portrait. CW: Brief domestic violence\, transition narrative.

SUMMARY:Kickstand Comedy Presents: Brandie Posey Live Album Recording
DESCRIPTION:Kickstand Comedy Presents: Comedian Brandie Posey (Comedy Central\, 3X Bridgetown Comedy Festival alumni\, Lady to Lady Podcast) as she returns to Portland to record her second comedy album\, a follow up to her critically acclaimed debut Opinion Cave.  \n\n\n\nOriginally planned to be recorded in 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic\, Brandie’s sophomore effort has become even more robust and precision-honed as she continued to tour across the country from the stages of the Kennedy Center in D.C. to crowded DIY basement shows in Whitesburg\, KY. In this new hour of material\, Brandie points her trademark whimsical\, yet fierce storytelling style towards her love of dogs\, 12 foot skeletons & the triumph that is aging into a person your younger self would think is rad as hell!  \n\n\n\nBrandie has chosen Portland to record in because of how amazing the audiences have always been to her\, and is excited to work with Kickstand Comedy\, an organization that shares her values & brings the same DIY energy to every project. She is excited to perform at the historic Clinton Street Theater\, as she has worn just about as many hats in entertainment as its hallowed halls. \n\n\n\nThe recording of Posey’s last album Opinion Cave was listed by Comedy Cake as one of 2015’s Most Memorable Stand Up Comedy Moments.  \n\n\n\n“Huddled in the back of a comic shop in Ventura about an hour north of Los Angeles\, punk rock comedian Brandie Posey proceeded to make magic while she recorded her debut comedy album… Posey’s stories are equally an intimate affair and a pure riot. Being there I felt like I was in on one of the raddest secrets in comedy\, but I know that even more people will know Brandie Posey soon enough when the album drops in 2016. I can’t wait to re-live it.” \n\n\n\n\n**Kickstand Comedy strives to eliminate barriers from comedy – a portion of seats at every Kickstand show are pay-what-you-want at the door. \n\n\n\nKickstand Comedy is a 501c3 nonprofit theater that seeks to serve the needs of our community—providing programming and educational outreach that helps people laugh\, connect\, and thrive together. We are known for curated live comedy with a focus on quality\, community\, and unique voices and are guided by a diverse and dedicated Board of Directors. SUMMARY:SUB ROSA — An Afternoon of Low Lives & High Strangeness
DESCRIPTION:APOCALYPSE CONFIDENTIAL is proud to present a double feature of Portland sin and sleaze\, as well as live readings of encounters with the peculiar and paranormal. Join us for an afternoon of low lives and high strangeness! \n\n\n\n“Portland Expose” is a Poverty Row film noir from 1957\, based on a LIFE magazine article about Senate hearings on organized crime and labor corruption in the City of Roses. Banned at the time from screening within a 30-mile radius of Portland\, it’s a schlocky\, sinsational story of pushers\, pimps\, and pinball hustlers!“Unhinged” is a 1982 slasher flick made by locals and filmed after hours at the Pittock Mansion–with Gus Van Sant serving as a location stout. Deemed a video nasty by UK censors\, it’s an exemplary work of scuzzy\, sleazy sinema\, made the Weird Portland way.

SUMMARY:In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In Necrocity\, 300 kilos of heroin are missing\, the police jump to action. Here\, the state is merely a means to efficiently impose cruel police brutality and arbitraty violence\, and an underground of club-goers indulge in drugs\, parties\, and sex. A murderer is on the loose in this dystopian future city\, and crime is about to rise to a fever pitch. \n\n\n\nShades of Kenneth Anger and Alphaville pervade Pierre Clementi’s wild\, hypnotic\, and visually overpowering IN THE SHADOW OF THE BLUE RASCAL\, a monument of Parisian Underground Cinema. CW: violence\, sexual violence\, intravenous drug use.

SUMMARY:Psychotronic Afterschool Special
DESCRIPTION:What do Orson Welles\, processed food\, bigomy\, necromancy and pre-teen alcoholism all have in common? They’ve all been woven together to make PSYCHOTRONIC AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL\, a handmade 16mm program packed with AV gems from the 1970s and 80s. Assembled from the 16mm collection of Portland film archivist Greg Hamilton\, this presentation borrows the best and worst from his film library with a locally grown taste for the absurd. Focused on bizzare educational films\, public service announcements and advertisements\, this culture mash-up takes the classroom film experience and sets it loose with plenty of bizarre and hilarious moments spliced together. \n\n\n\nFeaturing three special films: \n\n\n\nFUTURE SHOCK (1973) Orson Welles hosts this documentary examination of a future gone wrong. Part dystopian omen\, part educational film. \n\n\n\nEAT DRINK AND BE WARY (1975) Shoppers\, cooks\, children and critics express their views on American eating habits and processed foods. \n\n\n\nTHE GLUG (1981) This classic ’80s after-school special begins with a pre-teen beer-heist and subsequent drinking party\, but ends with young Tony’s dependency on alcohol.  \n\n\n\nBuy the ticket and take the ride with this one-of-a-kind media massacre projected in 16mm! \n\n\n\nCurated by Portland film archivist / programmer Greg Hamilton.

SUMMARY:Spell (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A sustained\, fragmented maelstrom of society’s fractured decline into violence\, eroticism\, and politics\, occuring in an Italian village during the parade of its patron saint. Following a host of characters as their stories collide and intersect with explosive results\, it’s a psychedelic monument to Italy’s Years of Lead! \n\n\n\nMade in response to Pasolini’s Salo and Makavajev’s Sweet Movie\, SPELL—SWEET SLAUGHTERHOUSE is Alberto Cavallone’s Surrealismo estremo at its finest\, told in darkly compelling vignettes of madness\, betrayal\, brutality\, sex and the grotesque. SUMMARY:Embrace of the Serpent
DESCRIPTION:A breathtaking ethnographic odyssey through the heart of the Colombian Amazon\, Embrace of the Serpent is the epic story of the first contact\, approach\, betrayal and\, eventually\, friendship\, between Karamakate\, an amazonian shaman\, last survivor of his people\, and two scientists that\, over the course of 40 years\, become the first men to travel the Northwest Amazon in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. \n\n\n\nWith nine different languages spoken during the course of the film\, this hypnotic meditation on the beauty of nature and effects of colonialism is presented with an uncommon sense of curiosity rarely seen. The crisp black and white photography captures the extraordinary landscapes with a haunting\, almost mythical sense of wonder\, while the balance between documentary-style realism and dreamlike mysticism makes for a truly poetic cinematic experience. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Ciro Guerra\n Year: 2015\n Country: Colombia\, Venezuela\, Argentina\n Runtime: 125 minutes

SUMMARY:School of the Holy Beast
DESCRIPTION:Directed by legendary Toei filmmaker Norifumi Suzuki (SEX & FURY)\, SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST is the supreme queen of “nunspolitation” in Japan\, and a film that might even be more outrageous than Ken Russell’s THE DEVILS. \n\n\n\nThe movie follows initiate Maya (Yumi Takigawa\, Nami in the first NEW FEMALE PRISONER SCORPION film)\, who takes the vows at the Sacred Heart Convent in order to discover what happened to her mother many years earlier there. What she uncovers – including corruption\, acid vats\, bondage\, murder\, lesbianism\, and topless nuns whip-fighting – pales in comparison to the truth of her mother’s disappearance and Maya’s own real identity. \n\n\n\nDeeply transgressive\, sharply photographed\, and almost supernaturally beautiful\, SCHOOL was largely unknown to English-speaking audiences until the past decade and is now a pinnacle of Japanese cult cinema. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Norifumi Suzuki\n Year: 1974\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 91 minutes
