SUMMARY:Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Japanese Festival running Monday\, July 24 through Monday\, August 7. Full festival passes available. \n\n\n\n\nThe first in a four-film Female Prisoner Scorpion cycle charts the vengeance of Nami Matsushima—a gullible\, unjustly imprisoned woman who must find a way to escape and exact revenge upon the man who betrayed her\, and who becomes an avatar of survival and an unlikely symbol of female resistance in a male-dominated world. \n\n\n\nFeaturing stunning pop-art compositions and ultra-violent outbursts\, the film has been described as “pure exploitation” by critics as is one of the best know examples of the “pinky violence” subgenre developed by Japanese film company Toei in the 1970s as a way to compete with the influx of American grindhouse. \n\n\n\nPresented in Japanese language with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n(CW: This film contains scenes that could be viewed as controversial\, offensive\, or even triggering.) \n\n\n\n \n Director: Yasuharu Hasebe\n Year: 1973\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 89 minutes

SUMMARY:Ugetsu
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Japanese Festival running Monday\, July 24 through Monday\, August 7. Full festival passes available. \n\n\n\n\nRegarded as the masterwork of Japan’s Golden Age of Film\, UGETSU (1953)\, shortened from Ugetsu Monogatari—the title of Ueda Akinari’s 1776 book of the same name\, is credited with simultaneously helping to popularize Japanese cinema in the West and influencing later Japanese film. \n\n\n\nYounger directors like Akira Kurosawa fiercely revered director Kenji Mizoguchi\, who made more than 100 films between 1923 and 1956. \n\n\n\nIn this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy derived from stories by Akinari Ueda and Guy de Maupassant\, the viewer is guided through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, the film reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \n\n\n\nNearly always included in any top 50 list among critics\, Roger Ebert called it “one of the greatest of all films\,” a sentiment echoed by directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky and Martin Scorsese. \n\n\n\nPresented in Japanese language with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Kenji Mizoguchi\n Year: 1953\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:Tetsuo: The Iron Man
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Hanabi Japanese Festival running Monday\, July 24 through Monday\, August 7. Full festival passes available. \n\n\n\n\nCalled the “cyberpunk ERASERHEAD\,” Shinya Tsukamoto’s underground classic was virtually absent from theaters for decades as all physical releases were out of print. Now available in a brand new restoration\, the film is an unhinged metaphor of humankind’s ongoing battle with technology; literally\, as a man mutates into a walking\, clanking machine that terrorizes himself and everyone around him. \n\n\n\nWarping elements of early Cronenberg\, Lynch\, and Raimi into a deliriously-paced cocktail\, Tsukamoto’s body horror manifesto was largely ignored until it won Best Picture at 1989’s Fantafestival in Rome\, prompting sold out late-night screenings in its home country and helping kick start a new revival of independent film in Japan. \n\n\n\nFueled by techno-erotic adrenaline and wrought iron perversion\, the grueling 16mm production was finished almost entirely by the director and just two actors\, Kei Fujiwara and Shinya Tsukamoto. Today\, directors from Tarantino to The Wachowskis cite the film as a major influence. \n\n\n\nPresented in Japanese language with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n(CW: This film contains scenes that could be viewed as controversial\, offensive\, or even triggering.) \n\n\n\n \n Director: Shinya Tsukamoto\n Year: 1989\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 67 minutes

SUMMARY:Anti-Capitalism At Work: Finding a Good Job
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Marina Martinez-Bateman\, People-First Management Expert\, CEO\, New Coyote Consulting \n\n\n\n\nWhen we talk about being anti-capitalist\, what does that mean for the job hunt? No matter what else\, it’s our obligation to survive and thrive within a system that was not made for us. So what does an anti-capitalist look for in a job? What questions and criteria can we rely on to give us an idea of whether or not our new employer will either share our vision\, or at the very least be as minimally exploitative of our labor as possible? \n\n\n\nThis will be a digital and in-person facilitated conversation with the goal of helping us create stronger boundaries at work. We’ll open with a brief story that outlines the concept\, then we’ll use that to kick off a facilitated discussion focused on solutions and next steps the average worker can take in real-time.  \n\n\n\n\nAbout Marina: Marina Martinez-Bateman (they/them) is a serial entrepreneur and a grassroots communicator with more than 20 years’ experience motivating people to take action on behalf of political\, cultural\, and commercial interests. They are an expert in person-centered management and anti-capitalist business administration.

SUMMARY:The Battle of Algiers
DESCRIPTION:Special screening celebrating the legacy of Frantz Fanon and to raise funds for indigenous people in Winnemucca. \n\n\n\nOne of the most influential political films in history\, The Battle of Algiers\, by Gillo Pontecorvo\, vividly re-creates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. As violence escalates on both sides\, children shoot soldiers at point-blank range\, women plant bombs in cafés\, and French soldiers resort to torture to break the will of the insurgents. Shot on the streets of Algiers in documentary style\, the film is a case study in modern warfare\, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them. Pontecorvo’s tour de force has astonishing relevance today. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Gillo Pontecorvo\n Year: 1966\n Country: Italy\, Algeria\n Runtime: 120 minutes

SUMMARY:Fantastic Planet
DESCRIPTION:Nothing else has ever looked or felt like director René Laloux’s animated marvel—a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam\, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). \n\n\n\nAfter Terr\, kept as a pet since infancy\, escapes from his gigantic child captor\, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie\, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes\, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence. \n\n\n\n \n Director: René Laloux\n Year: 1973\n Country: France\, Czechoslovakia\n Runtime: 71 minutes

SUMMARY:Visitor of a Museum (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In the near future\, the polar ice caps have melted and laid waste to the world. A small ruling class emerges jealously guarding the remains of civilizations\, while the deeply religious masses\, born “degenerate” from the toxic air and water\, are driven into camps or kept as servants. They await a savior. Suddenly a man emerges. He is seeking a museum that becomes accessible for only one week a year\, when the sea levels drop and the oceans part—and he is seeking faith in a world without salvation. \n\n\n\nMoody\, terrifying\, and hallucinatory\, VISITOR OF A MUSEUM is perhaps the most acclaimed film of Konstantin Lopushansky\, a protege of Andrei Tarkovsky.

SUMMARY:LOVE\, DEUTSCHMARK AND DEATH
DESCRIPTION:The German Federal Republic’s 1961 recruitment agreement with Turkey not only brought “guest workers” to Germany but also their music. Cem Kaya’s dense documentary film essay is a tutorial in Turkish-German recent history that tells a tale of assembly line jobs\, homesickness and family reunification\, the bazaar in the elevated railway station at Berlin’s Bülowstraße\, xenophobia and racism\, the wistful songs of the early years and the hip-hop of the post-reunification period. \n\n\n\nThese are the stories shared by musicians beginning with Metin Türköz and Yüksel Özkasap\, to the psychedelic Derdiyoklar and the chart-topping rapper Muhabbet. Their music has evolved a long way from that of German bands and has always developed out of the Turkish community and its desires. This is the world of Radio Yilmaz\, various music cassette labels\, protest rocker Cem Karaca’s German exile\, and wedding bands that also sing in Kurdish and Arabic to meet the demands of the market. \n\n\n\nExtensive archival research and an interest in Turkish popular culture are recurring themes in Cem Kaya’s work. With Aşk\, Mark ve Ölüm\, he has created a rhythmic and vividly narrated cinematic encyclopaedia of Turkish music in Germany. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Cem Kaya\n Year: 2022\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:The Invention of Morel (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A refugee washes up on the shore of a strange and barren island. At the far end lies an enigmatic “museum\,” or rather a beautiful Art Deco mansion\, the purpose of which remains unknown. But the island isn’t as deserted as the visitor had assumed—an enigmatic group of vacationers clad in 1920s getup occasionally appear. Are they real\, the hallucinations of a delirious and starving man\, or is there some other answer to their mysterious presence? \n\n\n\nTHE INVENTION OF MOREL is a stylish adaptation of Adolfo Bioy Casares’s celebrated novel\, starring Anna Karina!

SUMMARY:My Americana
DESCRIPTION:Join Ollie Collins and Shane O’Shields for a night of honest entertainment – for the 7th biennial installment of My Americana! \n\n\n\nMy Americana (2023) is the story of life in Portland\, OR. Water Parks. Reverend Ghostman. Dreams. Death. Pancakes. 102 Jamz. Rain. Money. Parades. Happiness. The American Dream.  \n\n\n\nFirst performed in 2011\, My Americana is a performance piece with a single stage performer accompanied with a live musician and overhead projections. The show is produced every other year\, presenting all new stories and songs\, while featuring a different musician. \n\n\n\nThis year’s My Americana will feature the talented Shane O’Shields as the musician. Described by some as a mystical\, fuzzy\, friendly giant\, Shane will bring his own flavor of Americana Classical Psychedelia and Blues to this year’s My Americana\, by playing the cello\, guitar\, ukulele\, drums\, tambourine and a kazoo. \n\n\n\nFrom Ollie\, the Writer\, Director and Stage Performer: \n\n\n\n“I put everything into My Americana. It’s a chance for me to provide snapshots of an individual\, which I believe helps inform the story of a culture. The show is called My Americana\, but I’ve always seen it as Our Americana – it’s really about all of us. We strive to make the show less of a performer’s cathartic experience and more about an entertaining\, thought-provoking and fun time for the audience. At the same time\, if you’ve ever wanted to see me perform passionately and perhaps gain some insight about the crazy man who does the intros at the Ten Minute Play Festivals\, this is your chance.” \n\n\n\nWritten\, Directed and Performed by Ollie Collins \n\n\n\nMusic by Shane O’Shields \n\n\n\nRun time: 50 Minutes \n\n\n\nNo Intermission \n\n\n\n“My Americana is good. My Americana is great. My Americana is a great big dinner plate.” \n\n\n\n***We will not turn away anyone for lack of funds. SUMMARY:A Wandering Path - The Story of Gilead Media
DESCRIPTION:Q&A following the screening. \n\n\n\nAdam Bartlett started the Gilead Media Record Label in 2005. His first releases were small runs of LPs and CDs\, that he did for his own band and his friends’ bands\, but fast forward to the present\, he now runs a celebrated underground label that is renowned internationally for putting out black metal\, doom\, and noise rock releases of well-known bands. He and his business partner\, Dave Adelson\, from the record label\, 20 Buck Spin\, put on Migration Fest every two years where heavy music fans from around the world come together to perform\, hang out\, and create strong personal bonds. \n\n\n\nThrough live performances\, interviews\, and behind the scenes hangouts\, we meet the artists behind the music\, learn how they write and perform music as a means to cope with issues such as sexual abuse\, depression\, childhood indoctrination of Christianity\, and grief from loss of loved ones. A Wandering Path\, features appearances from members of Panopticon\, Couch Slut\, A Scanner Darkly\, Mizmor\, Thou\, Emma Ruth Rundle\, Krallice\, Inter Arma\, Neurosis\, Enslaved\, His Hero is Gone\, Yellow Eyes\, Mania\, Leech\, Blood Incantation\, Fell Voices\, Mutilation Rites\, Wiegedood\, Fórn\, and Pyrolatrous.

SUMMARY:FHAR/MLA: Cinema of Gay & Women's Liberation in France (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from anarchist and Trotskyite groups in Paris’s May ’68 uprising\, the Homosexual Front for Revolutionary Action (FHAR) and the Women’s Liberation Movement (MLF) formulated a radical and provocative approach to challenging bourgeois gender oppression. They also made a lot of kickass films—a treasure of experimental shorts\, documentaries\, and essay work by the artists who founded these groups! FHAR/MLF explores the work of Lionel Soukaz\, Carole Roussopoulos\, and work featuring trans icons like FHAR founding member Marie France. Extremely rare underground cinema\, with lots of subtitle work by Church of Film!

SUMMARY:Violet Hex Presents: Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best trans films you’ve likely never heard of\, Antonio Giménez-Rico’s landmark 1983 documentary Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul) explores the lives and loves of a group of six transgender women living in Madrid in the years following Spain’s transition to democracy. But more than that\, it’s a loving portrait of a culture finally emerging from the shadows after being hidden for far too long. \n\n\n\nAntonio’s portrait of these women gave them the freedom to portray their own stories with their own friends & family\, but in a stylized scripted narrative framework with gorgeous cinematography by Teo Escamilla. \n\n\n\nThe stories of Eva\, Nacha\, Loren\, Josette\, Reneé\, & Tamara were never properly released outside of Spain and never available on home video\, but finally Altered Innocence and Anus Films is proud to present this vital testament to just how far we’ve come—and how far there’s still left to go. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Antonio Giménez Rico\n Year: 1983\n Country: Spain\n Runtime: 96 minutes
