SUMMARY:TWO DIVA FANTASIES: RAPSODIA SATANICA & IL FAUNO (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:The cult of femininity & the modern woman\, and a belief in the occult powers of the newly-born cinematic medium\, gave rise to a new kind of film in Italy: that of imperious majesty\, demonic appeal\, and feminist subversion\, all focused on the image of a celluloid goddess\, a Star: the Diva. \n\n\n\nThis program presents two films from the Diva cycle with a twist of gothic fantasy. RAPSODIA SATANICA (1917)\, featuring the legendary Lyda Borelli\, is an entrancing visual poem in which a haughty woman makes a pact with the devil to regain her youth & beauty\, with gorgeous stencil coloring. In THE FAUN (1917)\, a neglected woman falls in love with the statue of a mythical man-beast\, escaping to live an idyllic romance in the wild. \n\n\n\nRapsosia Satanica will feature the existing original score\, by the sensational opera composer Pietro Mascagni (the only film commission he ever accepted). Church of Film will provide an ambient track for THE FAUN.

SUMMARY:Rabiye Kurnaz vs George W Bush
DESCRIPTION:Rabiye Kurnaz is someone you might generally call an ordinary woman\, except that she is a real dynamo. Taking care of her children and much more\, she is the one running the show in her terraced house in Bremen. Shortly after the attacks of September 11\, 2001\, her son Murat is accused of terrorism and is (one of the first) shipped off to Guantanamo prison camp. This marks the beginning of a journey into the heart of world politics for this resolute German-Turkish woman. Together with human rights lawyer Bernhard Docke\, whom she soon has completely on her side (like almost everyone around her)\, she battles for the release of her son – using her very own brand of self-taught English – all the way to the Supreme Court in Washington\, D.C. \n\n\n\nCologne-based comedienne\, author\, presenter and much more Meltem Kaptan is the perfect fit for Andreas Dresen’s special talent for combining explosive topics (in this case based on actual events) and the everyday concerns of the average citizen. Kaptan’s\, or rather Rabiye’s\, performance is overwhelming\, and not just for the lawyer (played by Alexander Scheer) who quickly becomes a friend. A portrait of a passionate woman who holds the steering wheel of her beloved vehicle as firmly in her hand as she does the reins in this turbo-charged film. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Andreas Dresen\n Year: 2022\n Country: Germany\, France\n Runtime: 119 minutes

SUMMARY:She the Creator
DESCRIPTION:Set in the isolated town of Port Townsend\, WA\, SHE THE CREATOR (2022) is a psycho-spiritual thriller following Lilith (Bernadette Cuvalo); an agoraphobic painter obsessed with the alchemical process\, who’s only connection to the outside world is through her young and enamored caretaker Kat (Johanna Warren). \n\n\n\nLilith begins to lose sight of reality as her paintings take on a life of their own and Kat makes a deal to sell Lilith’s work at a local gallery. Kat’s growing obsession with Lilith and her art pushes Lilith’s mental state to the limits as the subjects in her paintings begin appearing to her in visions and dreams. As Lilith walks the line between creativity and self-destruction\, her realities collide and she must make a choice as to which demons she will face\, and how far she is willing to go to achieve artistic perfection. \n\n\n\nDirected by Ettie Wahl\, this film is a prayer\, a dedication\, and a commitment to every artist\, queer person\, and survivor—to learn the balance between devotion to our work and to ourselves.

SUMMARY:Texas Trip: A Carnival of Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:A psychedelic journey through abandoned drive-ins\, places of cultural madness\, portraits of underground artists\, noise music and primal masks. Directorial duo Maxime Lachaud and Steve Balestreri’s beguiling debut feature is a societal portrait of underground and alternative artists. \n\n\n\nLive performance from Attic Ted—a musical/visual weirdo cabaret country carnival art-house performance artists from Texas\, who utilize homemade masks and an un-traditional approach to entertaining. \n\n\n\nFor over 20 years Grady Roper and Coby Cardosa have been releasing albums and touring the world\, sharing their odd-ball approach of combining Hammond organ\, twangy guitar\, synthesizer sounds\, clarinet\, drums and character based vocals. They could be described as a love child between influences such as: Butthole Surfers\, The Residence\, Klaus Nomi\, and Talking Heads… quirky and gothic\, yet danceable and funny\, yet dark and unnerving. One reviewer says “It’s like going to the Wurst Festival\, where someone dosed the beer with LSD.”
