SUMMARY:Blessings Movie Night Presents: Ghost in the Shell (1995) with Live Score

SUMMARY:DESIGNS FOR LIVING A Collection of Experimental Films (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:The architects of capital envisioned a future close at hand\, of consumerist utopia\, absolute automation\, and urban and domestic planning that would enrich\, and reinforce\, the traditional nuclear family and capitalist order. Things didn’t go as planned. \n\n\n\nDESIGNS FOR LIVING is a disrespectful\, disapproving collection of films depicting capitalist designs and their ignominious flops\, through company-spread industrial musicals by General Motors and others\, to the biting rejoinders of filmmakers throughout South America\, and lastly\, to some truly bizarre\, hippy-anarchist fantasies of different cities and homes. Far out\, square\, hilarious and troubling!

SUMMARY:Top of the Heap
DESCRIPTION:Written and directed by Black filmmaker Christopher St. John (SHAFT)\, this film is a majestic melding of genre thrills\, sociological rage\, and psychedelic experimentation. George (St. John) is a cop in Washington\, DC\, and he’s proud to be one of the few Black officers on the force. Unfortunately\, not everyone feels the same. When George is overlooked for a promotion\, he loses his handhold on reality and launches a personal vendetta against street crime. That is\, when he’s not visiting alternate galaxies as an astronaut in his tripped-out dreams. \n\n\n\nOriginally billed as an American blaxploitation flick\, St. John’s film was nominated for the Gold Bear award at the 1972 Berlin Film Festival and is being seen in a new light as a proto-avant-garde work ahead of its time. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Christopher St. John\n Year: 1972\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 94 minutes

SUMMARY:Quilombo
DESCRIPTION:This historical saga is a stirring fusion of folklore\, political impact and dynamic story-telling\, realized in vibrant tropical colors and set to the pulsing beat of Gilberto Gil’s musical score. \n\n\n\nAfter the slave revolt of 1641\, groups of enslaved Black Brazilians escaped to mountainous jungle strongholds where they formed self-governing communities in a region dubbed “Quilombo dos Palmares\,” and considered by historians to be “undoubtedly the largest fugitive community to have existed in Brazil.” The people there developed a society and government that derived from a range of Central African sociopolitical models\, and a reflection of the diverse ethnic origins of its inhabitants. \n\n\n\nThis 1984 film directed by Carlos Diegues—who previously directed a similar film\, which was shelved for nearly a decade due to the 1964 military coup—is the chronicle of the most famous of these communities which flourished for several decades under the reign of the legendary chieftain Ganga Zumba.*Screened in Portuguese with English-language subtitles.* \n\n\n\n \n Director: Carlos Diegues\n Year: 1984\n Country: Brazil\n Runtime: 119 minutes

SUMMARY:Portland Premier: In The Dirt
DESCRIPTION:IN THE DIRT is a documentary film about a group of passionate Native American cyclists who attempt to bring the sport of mountain biking to the Navajo Nation\, where no bike shops exist. \n\n\n\nIn 2018\, retired pro cyclist Scott Nydam and his family moved to Gallup\, New Mexico to pursue a healthcare job for his wife. Soon after their arrival\, Scott began meeting passionate mountain bikers across the 28\,000-mile expanse of the Navajo Nation who loved the bike and wanted to bring the sport to their communities. The only problem is no bike shops existed. Through a grassroots native-led effort\, this group of dedicated cyclists and their families have overcome countless odds to build a cycling culture that today has become the fastest-growing recreational sport on the Navajo Nation.

SUMMARY:Passing Through
DESCRIPTION:Written\, produced\, directed and edited by Larry Clark\, the film follows Eddie Warmack\, an African American jazz musician who is released from prison for the killing of a white gangster. Not willing to play for the mobsters who control the music industry\, including clubs and recording studios\, Warmack searches for his mentor and grandfather\, the legendary jazz musician Poppa Harris.  \n\n\n\nClark theorizes that jazz is one of the purest expressions of African American culture\, embodying the struggles of generations of Blacks going back to slavery times\, but now hijacked by a white culture that brutally exploits jazz musicians for profit. The opening seven-minute credit sequence is accordingly an homage to jazz and jazz musicians\, privileging the raw energy of the music\, while the concert footage appears virtually abstractly as a riot of blues\, reds and whites.  \n\n\n\nThe film repeatedly returns to scenes of various musicians improvising jazz\, as well as flashback scenes (in black-and-white) in which Poppa teaches Warmack to play saxophone\, leading a French critic to call Passing Through“the only jazz film in the history of cinema.” \n\n\n\nIt is the Africanism of Poppa\, as the spiritual center of Passing Through\, that ties together Black American jazz and the liberation movements of Africa and North America. In the early flashback sequences in sepia\, Clarence Muse appears in African dress and teaches saxophone under the sky. Poppa teaches Warmack that the music comes from the soil\, from the earth\, leading Womack to bury his saxophone to improve his playing. The film’s final montage incorporates shots of African leaders with a close-up of Poppa’s eye and close-ups of Black hands holding the soil\, thus semantically connecting jazz\, Africa and the earth in one mystical union\, and by extension justifying the liberation of the earth through violent struggle\, whether in Africa or Los Angeles.  \n\n\n\nClark completed the film while participating in the fellows program at the American Film Institute. The film’s world premiere took place at “Filmex\,” the Los Angeles Film Festival in 1977\, subsequently won a special jury prize at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland) and played film festivals in Edinburgh (1978)\, Perth (1978) and Moscow (1979). \n\n\n\nThough it is now considered a landmark of American independent cinema\, Passing Through cannot be seen outside of rare screenings by the director. Additionally\, the film has not been released on home video. When asked why Passing Through could only be seen through theatrical exhibitions\, Clark stated that he wanted to keep it that way so that the film would be seen in the right format and with a communal audience. He also expressed his disappointment at how films often look on home video formats\, and he emphasized he did not want the film to be compromised in similar fashion. Clark added he was under no commercial pressure to make more money through home distribution as the film had been self-financed. \n\n\n\nPassing Through was recently selected for the 2023 Library of Congress National Film Registry. The Clinton Street Theater is very honored to be one of the few places to screen this monumentally important film thanks to the approval of Larry Clark\, who has also provided a slideshow of selected painting that will be shown before the film. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Larry Clark\n Year: 1977\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 104 minutes

SUMMARY:Drylongso
DESCRIPTION:A lost treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking\, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/ romance. \n\n\n\nAlarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying—indeed\, “becoming extinct\,” as she sees it—brash Oakland art student Pica (Toby Smith) attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots\, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship (April Barnett)\, experiencing love and loss\, and being drawn into the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties\, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Cauleen Smith\n Year: 1999\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 86 minutes
