SUMMARY:We Are Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:This documentary goes into the lives of five different sex workers who lived and worked during the beginning of the 2020 covid-19 pandemic in Portland\, Oregon. It highlights their lives and how difficult it is to work in our high risk field during a global pandemic.  \n\n\n\nThis film provides a rare opportunity for sex workers to discuss their own stories with dignity\, compassion\, and care. Society often perpetuates harmful and violent narratives and punitive laws towards sex workers. These beliefs and targeted legislation emboldens the violence that is already directed at us. We are murdered at such high rates that being marginalized beyond our work as sex providers is often a death sentence.  \n\n\n\nThis movie doesn’t just focus on positive sanitized profiles of privileged white sex workers but an opportunity for marginalized black\, brown\, indigenous\, people of color\, and trans people to tell their own stories.

SUMMARY:Mississippi Masala
DESCRIPTION:The vibrant cultures of India\, Uganda\, and the American South are blended and simmered into a rich and fragrant fusion feast in Mira Nair’s luminous look at the complexities of love in the modern melting pot. \n\n\n\nYears after her Indian family was forced to flee their home in Uganda by the dictatorship of Idi Amin\, twentysomething Mina (Sarita Choudhury) finds herself helping to run a motel in the faraway land of Mississippi. It’s there that a passionate romance with the charming Black carpet cleaner Demetrius (Denzel Washington) challenges the prejudices of their conservative families and exposes the rifts between the region’s Indian and African American communities.  \n\n\n\nTackling thorny issues of racism\, colorism\, culture clash\, and displacement with big-hearted humor and keen insight\, Nair serves up a sweet\, sexy\, and radical celebration of love’s power to break down the barriers between us. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Mira Nair\n Year: 1991\n Country: UK\, USA\n Runtime: 118 minutes

SUMMARY:Symbio- psychotaxiplasm: Take One
DESCRIPTION:In his one-of-a-kind fiction/documentary hybrid\, director William Greaves presides over a beleaguered film crew in New York’s Central Park\, leaving them to try to figure out what kind of movie they’re making. A couple enacts a break-up scenario over and over\, a documentary crew films a crew filming the crew\, locals wander casually into the frame: the project defies easy description. Yet this wildly innovative sixties counterculture landmark remains one of the most tightly focused and insightful movies ever made about making movies. \n\n\n\n \n Director: William Greaves\n Year: 1968\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 75 minutes

SUMMARY:EL GRITO (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 1968 in Mexico City\, a student strike grew into massive walk-outs and demonstrations of hundreds of thousands. As the city prepares for the Olympic ceremonies in October\, the government makes a horrifying decision to save the Games (and themselves). \n\n\n\nEL GRITO was shot on the ground of the student protests that summer\, made by the students themselves\, building up to and capturing on film forever the fateful day in Tlatelolco\, October 2nd—the day the Mexican state went to war with its own unarmed people. \n\n\n\nThe film was banned and buried for decades in a coverup by the Mexican government and its state media\, existing only as a legend.

SUMMARY:The Watermelon Woman
DESCRIPTION:Cheryl Dunye made cinematic history with her debut\, the first American feature to be directed by a Black lesbian as well as an incisive\, humorous critique of classic Hollywood’s racist stereotypes. \n\n\n\nDunye plays an eponymous video store employee and burgeoning filmmaker who sets out to make a documentary on the Watermelon Woman (Lisa Marie Bronson)\, an actress who specialized in “mammy” roles for Hollywood productions of the 30s and 40s. As Cheryl uncovers the Watermelon Woman’s identity she not only learns about a secret behind-the-scenes interracial romance but also begins one of her own with Diana (Guinevere Turner)\, a white woman who arouses the ire of Cheryl’s best friend Tamara (Valerie Walker). A landmark of the New Queer Cinema that testifies to the power of excavating legacies of oppression and in the process creates a progressive legacy of its own. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Cheryl Dunye\n Year: 1996\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 90 minutes
