SUMMARY:Do Not Resist
DESCRIPTION:A documentary about the increasing use of military weapons and tactics by local law enforcement in the United States\, counterpointed with civil unrest in Ferguson\, Missouri following the shooting of Michael Brown in 2014. \n\n\n\nThis event also includes a screening of the short film “Conditioned Response” about how ex-Army Ranger and “killology” expert Dave Grossman has been traveling across the US to train police officers on his philosophy of killing. Footage from one of Grossman’s seminars is juxtaposed with stark\, brutal images of police brutality—including the shooting of Philando Castile by a Minnesota police officer\, and the short film “The Hunted and the Hated” about the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy. \n\n\n\nPart of the Policing Justice series by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art.

SUMMARY:THE MYSTICAL ROSE (1976) (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A dark and challenging operatic tornado of animation\, a grim and surreal knot of sex and violence in meticulous designs. Vagina dentatas and self-annihilating phalluses crawl over terrain alien and familiar in this perverse recreation of a Catholic Mass! Michael Lee made his magnum opus\, \n\n\n\nTHE MYSTICAL ROSE\, as a response to his conflicted feelings about his own strict religious upbringing\, just as he was colliding with the spirited counter-culture in Melbourne. The result is an often hilarious\, often disturbing\, and always awe-inspiring bohemian howl against malevolent rituals and traditions. (CW: intense visual stimulation\, strobe\, graphic imagery\, both real killing of livestock and simulated animal violence).

SUMMARY:Fast Break
DESCRIPTION:Evoking a cinéma vérité feel not found in most sports documentaries\, Fast Break examines the 1977 Trail Blazers in a surprisingly personal and compelling fashion. Inter-cutting excerpts from the 1977 playoff / championship season\, the film steps outside of the basketball court\, and into the everyday lives of the Trail Blazers\, as well as their coach Jack Ramsey. Whether it’s biking the Oregon coast with Bill Walton\, hosting a kids basketball camp with Dave Twardzik\, or joking with Maurice Lucas at the pool—Fast Break lets the players speak for themselves: about basketball\, life and playing in Portland. \n\n\n\nHosted and moderated by film curator Greg Hamilton\, join us after the show for a Q&A with author Larry Colton\, who interviewed the team in the film. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Don Zavin\n Year: 1978\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 107 minutes

SUMMARY:Sam's 21st
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present a staged reading of Sam’s 21st\, a brand-new musical that follows college student Sam on the night of her quintessential “welcome-to-adulthood” birthday. To honor the occasion\, her roommates decide to throw her an epic party. Although she’d rather spend the night hiding in her room\, she is excited by the promised attendance of Sophie\, the high school crush that she never got over. But as the party gets going\, she is thrown for a loop when her best friend James makes a pass at Sophie. Sam’s long-repressed rage is awoken and\, personified by her own Psyche\, leads her down a path of revenge. \n\n\n\nSam’s 21st is a large-scale musical full of weird roommates\, ecstatic partygoers\, loud-ass tunes\, overwrought party games\, and the complications of friendship. With a cast of college-age queer and trans characters\, it portrays the angst and growing pains modern-day young people experience\, and takes a trip into the rich inner lives of overworked\, underslept college kids who just need a little break. \n\n\n\nWith music and lyrics by Duncan Kass and a book by Duncan Kass and Niels Truman\, Sam’s 21st is a journey through the life of an unforgettable\, no-holds-barred\, absolutely unhinged\, and definitely-not-overhyped party. It’s fun for the whole family! (minus the kids). \n\n\n\nThis reading of Sam’s 21st is made possible through the support of the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC).

SUMMARY:Violet Hex Presents POLY STYRENE: I AM A CLICHÉ!
DESCRIPTION:Please join on Friday\, April 12th for a queer celebration of the legacy and brilliance of iconic british punk pioneer POLY STYRENE! Featuring A DRAG TRIBUTE TO X-RAY SPEX with pre-film performances by Blossom Drearie\, Destiny Smokez\, Navouny Divinne\, & hosted by resident cult cinema queen Violet Hex. \n\n\n\nDoors at 7PM\, Show+Film at 8PM. \n\n\n\n\nPoly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion\, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity\, consumerism\, postmodernism\, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain\, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex\, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. But the late punk maverick didn’t just leave behind an immense cultural footprint. Poly was survived by a daughter\, Celeste Belle. Celeste became the unwitting guardian of her mother’s legacy and her mother’s demons. \n\n\n\nMisogyny\, racism\, and mental illness plagued Poly’s life\, while their lasting trauma scarred Celeste’s childhood and the pair’s relationship. Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga\, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother’s unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother. Featuring interviews from Thurston Moore\, Kathleen Hanna\, Vivienne Westwood\, Neneh Cherry\, & more.

DESCRIPTION:Zsolt\, a fancy man about town in his 40s\, swings by in a panic with an unusual request for Anna: help him call off his wedding later that afternoon! SUMMARY:MAGIC & ENIGMA: THE ANIMATION OF PRIIT PARN (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:A tiny man living under a stove terrifies and seduces a neglected housewife. A boy spends his life running around the globe\, afraid of the moon. A cloistered elite idles in a land of light\, color\, and consumer pleasures\, but must confront a separate world of darkness behind a door. These are some of the visions in the absurd existential dreamscapes of Estonian animator Priit Parn. \n\n\n\nEschewing the elegant stylings of Soviet animation of the time\, Parn opted for a surreal style that could be ugly and disturbing\, but even more varied and meticulous. This program includes his masterpieces HOTEL E and BREAKFAST ON THE GRASS\, along with many other rare treats from his career.
