SUMMARY:Church of Film: Russian Fairy Tale Animation
DESCRIPTION:RUSSIAN FAIRY TALE ANIMATION! A collection of wondrous short fairy tale films from the Soviet Union’s best animation studio\, Soyuzmultfilm! \n\n\n\nGiven free reign stylistically\, and with no profit motive\, Soviet animators created one of the most productive and groundbreaking animation studios in the world to rival Walt Disney! While many of the fairy tales echo Disney’s choice of material\, Russian animators employed a broader technical diversity and approaches\, and often more abstract\, beautiful\, and phantasmagoric representations. \n\n\n\nIncluded will be Ivan Aksenchuk’s breathtaking THE LITTLE MERMAID (1968) and CINDERELLA (1979)\, work by the great Olga Khodataeva\, Vladimir Pekar’s exquisitely designed VASSILISSA THE BEAUTIFUL (1977)\, and much more! \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/kBLb09OxBAE

SUMMARY:The Cadence: A Tale of Paper and Cloth
DESCRIPTION:After the film there will be a conversation between writer and director Luca Dipierro and author Gabriel Urza. \n\n\n\n\nThe Cadence is a 33-minute animated film shot in stop motion by the artist Luca Dipierro\, using marionettes made with paper\, bookcloth\, and thread. Five years in the making\, the film features a soundtrack by freddie Murphy and Chiara Lee. \n\n\n\nThe Cadence tells the story of a boy\, lover of silence\, and the journey toward his own beginning. It’s a tale made of tales\, populated by bizarre characters who enter and exit swiftly\, as on a puppet theatre stage: masked children waiting for the last leaf to fall; a moon-faced mother; a vengeful horse; a sorrowful giant; a butcher boar; a hunter hunted; and many more.

SUMMARY:Church of Film: 4 Ghost Stories by M.R. James
DESCRIPTION:In the grave tradition of English ghost tale master M.R. James\, four films explore the uncanny and unclear boundaries between the living and the dead. \n\n\n\nIn THE SlGNALMAN\, a lonely train station functionary is haunted by visions of a phantom and the trauma of a crash that occurred years before. THE ASH TREE is a chilling tale of atavism and a witch’s revenge on a witchfinder general’s descendant. An elderly man with a taste for the Occult has a habit of adopting young orphans in LOST HEARTS\, but for what nefarious purpose? And a buried treasure brings misfortune and terror on the archaeologist who finds it\, for the treasure has an undead guardian in A WARNlNG TO THE CURlOUS… \n\n\n\nLawrence Gordon Clark’s stark and frankly terrifying adaptations of classic English ghost stories were a beloved Christmas tradition in the UK\, and still bring a chill! \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0iF68eZmxc&feature=youtu.be

SUMMARY:Blood Simple
DESCRIPTION:This razor-sharp modern film noir\, the first film by Joel and Ethan Coen\, introduced the brothers’ inimitable black humor and eccentric sense of character\, a sensibility that has helped shape the course of contemporary American cinema. Deep in the heart of Texas\, a sleazy bar owner suspects his wife of having an affair and hires a private detective to confirm his suspicions—only to have the crosshairs turned back on himself. Playfully shot by Barry Sonnenfeld and featuring a haunting score by Carter Burwell and a cunning performance by Frances McDormand\, Blood Simple was a career-launching film for this ensemble and the first articulation of the precision of style that has defined the Coens’ work ever since. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Coen Brothers\n Year: 1984\n Country: USA\n Runtime: 96 minutes

SUMMARY:School of Magical Animals (Die Schule der magischen Tiere)
DESCRIPTION:The charming live-action adventure with CGI animated animals about an unusual school\, where the children receive a magical animal as a companion\, centres on the new girl Ida\, who goes from being an outsider to the star student thanks to her magical animal\, the talking fox Rabbat. \n\n\n\nIda has had to move to another town and is now the “new girl” at the Winterstein School. She has a hard time in the new class: the bitchy Helene makes sure that Ida has scant chance of making any friends\, and there is only one place left for her on the first day of school – next to the outsider Benni. One day\, her teacher introduces the children to Mortimer Morrison who travels the world looking for “magical animals”. Each of these animals is destined to become a child’s soul mate. Of all people\, newcomer Ida and outsider Benni are the first in the class to have magical companions! From now on\, Benni has the ancient\, wise turtle Henrietta at his side and Ida the cunning fox Rabbat. When objects keep disappearing at school\, the children and the magical animals have to stick together to solve the mystery of the school thief. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Gregor Schnitzler\n Year: 2021\n Country: Germany\n Runtime: 89 minutes\n \n\n\n\n\nA strong\, original and incomparable story: translated into over 20 languages and published in such territories as China\, Japan\, South Korea\, all of Eastern Europe\, the Nordic region\, Israel\, Turkey\, Greece\, The Netherlands\, Spain and Portugal\, SCHOOL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS is one of the most successful children’s and young people’s book series with over 4.8 million copies sold in German-speaking countries. \n\n\n\nThe warm-hearted cinema adventure for the whole family is based on Margit Auer’s wonderful novels. Director Gregor Schnitzler (“The Cloud”) beautifully translated the essence of the books along with impressive visuals into an exceptional children’s film. Animation director Tomer Eshed (Lumatic Animation & VFX) created the likable\, funny and very special characters Rabbat\, Henrietta and Pinkie\, the animal stars who play such decisive roles in this feature film. \n\n\n\nThe successful producer Kordes & Kordes Film Süd (“Four Minutes”) adapted the book series for the big screen for the first time – with a budget of almost 10 million Euros and as a co-production with Wega Film (Vienna) and Leonine. \n\n\n\nBreakout hit at the German box office: more than 1 mio tickets sold in the first three weeks of release\, making for the best theatrical release of a German movie since the pandemic.

SUMMARY:Mannequin in Red (Church of Film)
DESCRIPTION:The Hillman Detective Agency is hot on the trail of a blackmailing model\, but the case takes a twist when she ends up with a knife in her back. In fact\, there are a lot of weird happenings and strange murders going on at La Femme fashion house\, which may have something to do with its imperious matron and her fortune. \n\n\n\nArne Mattsson’s THE MANNEQUIN IN RED seems on paper like a conventional thriller\, but its garish\, over the top art production\, ostentatious camerawork\, homoerotic subtexts and creepy thrills went way beyond its trappings. So far\, in fact\, that it won the admiration of Alfred Hitchcock\, and may have been the model for Mario Bava in creating the giallo film.

SUMMARY:Bride of Re-Animator
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Brian Yuzna (OCIETY\, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3)\, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR proves there’s a good deal more “life” left in the story of Dr. Herbert West and his ghoulish exploits. \n\n\n\nIt’s been eight years since the Miskatonic massacre. SUMMARY:Manhattan Short Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 25th Annual Short Film Festival\, a worldwide event taking place in over 400 venues across six continents between September 22 and October 2\, 2022. MANHATTAN SHORT is the only event of its kind. The Final Ten screen simultaneously across the world during a one-week period\, with the Best Film and Best Actor awards determined by ballots cast by the audiences in each participating venue. By virtue of their selection by MANHATTAN SHORT\, each short film is automatically Oscar-qualified. \n\n\n\nThe Final Ten MANHATTAN SHORT finalists hail from eight countries with films from Scotland\, Czech & Slovakia\, Spain\, Australia\, Finland and Lebanon\, alongside two films each from France and USA. These Final Ten Films represent the best short films from among 870 submissions from 70 countries received by MANHATTAN SHORT for 2022\, testimony to the enduring vibrancy and creativity of short films worldwide. \n\n\n\nIf the 10 short films presented by MANHATTAN SHORT have one common theme\, it’s how people deal with adversity in its various forms. Short films like The Blanket\, Freedom Swimmer and Freefall explore how individuals react when caught up in large-scale\, traumatic events. Adversity on a more personal level is the focus of short films like Warsha\, Fetish\, The Big Green and Love\, Dad. Sometimes\, the response is laughable\, as in Save the Bees and The Treatment\, especially when even the universe seems to be against you\, as in Don vs Lightning. \n\n\n\nHow these stories are told is varied as the directors that tell them. In short\, there is plenty of drama and comedy interwoven with surprisingly effective newer ways of storytelling like animated documentaries. \n\n\n\nMANHATTAN SHORT also is a showcase for rising-star actors and recognizable favorites like Disney stalwart Peton List and Scotsman Peter Mullan\, himself a prize-winning director\, appearing in unexpected\, talent-stretching roles. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe MANHATTAN SHORT Final Ten are: \n\n\n\nDon vs Lightning (Scotland) \n\n\n\n Love\, Dad (Czech & Slovakia) \n\n\n\n Save the Bees (USA) \n\n\n\nThe Treatment (Spain) \n\n\n\nFreefall (France) \n\n\n\n Fetish (USA) \n\n\n\n Freedom Swimmer(Australia) \n\n\n\n The Blanket (Finland) \n\n\n\n Warsha (Lebanon) \n\n\n\n The Big Green (France)
