DESCRIPTION:Appearing in Portland as part of their book release tour for Forming and Like Swimmers\, Floating World Comics presents a night of animation with Jesse Moynihan and Dash Shaw. The pair will screen new material they’re working on and host a discussion about their various artistic projects. \n\n\n\nJesse Moynihan worked as a writer/storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time from late Season 1 until the end of Season 7. He helped create the characters Lemongrab\, Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant\, Maja the Sky Witch\, and Jermaine to name a few. He was heavily involved in the story arcs pertaining to Magic Man\, Tiffany\, Lemongrab\, Betty\, Wizard City\, Glob\, and Finn’s grass arm. In 2014 he co-created the animated short\, “Manly” for Cartoon Hangover’s YouTube channel. Currently\, Jesse lives in Los Angeles recording music for his collaborative studio project Make A Rising and writing and drawing Forming—an eon-spanning epic work of modern mythology about the trajectory of consciousness on planet Earth\, now completed and published by Seattle’s Fantagraphics. \n\n\n\nDash Shaw is a cartoonist and animator. Shaw’s written and directed two animated features\, TIFF and NYFF’s 2016 My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea\, and most recently the 2021 film Cryptozoo which won the Sundance Next Innovator Award and was nominated for a John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award. His most recent graphic novel\, Like Swimmers\, is out now from New York Review Comics. His previous\, 2024’s Blurry\, was named a graphic novel of the year by The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Forbes\, and others. He’s also the cartoonist of Discipline\, Clue: Candlestick\, Bottomless Belly Button\, BodyWorld\, and others.

For the last 35 years of his life he has been living in exile\, 10\,000 km away from the bustle\, the intrigue\, the bribery and the squalor of Manila\, in the tranquil medieval city of Utrecht\, the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nIn the 1960s Jose Maria Sison founded the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the CPP’s guerrilla-military arm\, the New People’s Army (NPA)\, among other noble and nefarious activities that led to his Philippine passport being revoked in 1987. To the U.S. State Department\, the Philippine government\, and some European authorities\, Sison is a certified terrorist. \n\n\n\nWith his wife Julie (84) he lives a hand-to-mouth Spartan existence and yet they are the most charming couple. SUMMARY:Wonders of the Unseen World: A Night of Stag Films on 16mm
DESCRIPTION:21+ \n\n\n\n\nPickle your peter with the Forty Drop Few and Astral Projections\, and come for an evening of old time music and early 1900s stag films projected on 16mm. The film selection\, which comes from the Nyback Archive\, includes some incredibly rare films that can’t be seen in any other way. \n\n\n\nAs a collector of antique smut\, I was thrilled to find out about Ioana and Garrett’s collection of early 1900s stag reels. This event is an absolute DELIGHT for me not only because I’m obsessed with antique porn\, but also because I get to help choose which stag films were showing AND I get to play music for you all while we’re watching them. \n\n\n\nAs soon as photography and videography were invented\, they were used to make pornography. The making and distribution of pornographic materials was completely illegal due to the Comstock Act of 1873 and these obscenity restrictions were not relaxed until 1957. These laws of course did not slow down the production of porn by much\, folks were just careful with their distribution. The films were mostly viewed at brothels and men’s stag parties. The majority of the women who acted and modeled for films and photos were sex workers who were found through brothels.  \n\n\n\nI find antique pornography beautiful\, interesting\, educational\, and a wonderful eye-opening connection between the past and the present. I am always showing it and have given a few presentations on it at PCC. People are too frequently shocked that it can be just a crazy as pornography today. They always say “they were doing that back then???” Of course they were! They were just as intense\, just as freaky\, just as weird\, and also unfortunately just as evil as we are today. \n\n\n\nBut we will only be showing the good stuff! So please join us for an evening of beautiful\, freaky\, weird\, sexy\, shocking old porn from the early 1900s! And also\, wouldn’t it be great for Ioana and Garrett to be able to digitally transfer their entire collection of stag reels so that we can perhaps create an online archive of our very own? DESCRIPTION:San Francisco-based filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky has devoted the past sixty years to a body of cinematic work committed to images\, poetics\, and depictions of the sanctity and beauty of our natural and human worlds. Shot over the course of four years in 1966 to 1970\, Hours for Jerome (1982) is composed of a series of stanzas depicting Dorsky’s daily life in Manhattan and New Jersey’s Lake Owassa alongside his partner\, fellow filmmaker Jerome Hiler (for whom the film is named). Influenced by the work of John Ashbery and the Limbourg brothers\, Dorsky’s films distinguish him as a uniquely visual and emotive director\, marked by images of New England forests\, bustling scenes of the city\, and portrayals of light and shadows unlike any seen elsewhere on film. \n\n\n\nNever-digitized\, Hours for Jerome will be screened on 16mm\, providing a special opportunity to see the film. Alongside Hours for Jerome\, Dorsky’s three earliest and rarely-screened films will be played—Ingreen (1964)\, A Fall Trip Home (1964)\, and Summerwind (1965). A complimentary zine containing writings on the films will be available as well.

In intimate interviews\, we discuss the nuanced work of building trust between neighbors\, making decisions horizontally\, protecting our communities\, sharing the responsibility of communal infrastructure\, and more.  \n\n\n\nFor this event\, we will be screening Chapter 3: Water with a runtime of 62 minutes. This chapter focuses on how healing from the traumas of colonization and capitalism allows us to come back into mutual relationships with each other and ourselves. We talk about making safer spaces and being able to defend our communities\, handling crises without calling the police\, and navigating power dynamics\, burnout\, and conflict.Community mixer following the screening to be held at a separate location.

DESCRIPTION:21+ \n\n\n\n\nSpectrum Between presents Jack Smith’s notorious 1963 film Flaming Creatures on 16mm. Now recognized as an aesthetic and historical landmark in the traditions of American avant-garde film and radical queer art practice\, Smith’s film was greeted largely with revulsion by critics and intellectuals when it first screened in New York City. It was championed by a small but influential crowd of underground artists\, and quickly became a major censorship battleground. Attempted screenings lead to police raids\, free speech protests\, and eventually the arrests and convictions of Jonas Mekas\, Ken and Flo Jacobs\, and Jerry Tartaglia on obscenity grounds.  \n\n\n\nA significant influence on Susan Sontag’s essay “Notes On Camp\,” she wrote: “The only thing to be regretted about the close-ups of limp penises and bouncing breasts\, the shots of masturbation and oral sexuality\, in Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures is that it makes it hard simply to talk about this remarkable and beautiful film\, one has to defend it.” Indeed\, its position as a political and legal symbol threaten to obscure the pleasure and comedy in Smith’s vision. Featuring a cast of Warhol Superstars and other New York underground luminaries\, as well as a score by Tony Conrad\, Flaming Creatures is a whirlwind celebration of perverse sexuality\, gender ambiguity\, and orgiastic violence\, animated by Smith’s playful\, amateur approach and his love for trashy Hollywood B-movies and exotica. Though digital copies of Flaming Creaturescan be found online\, these poor transfers lose much of the film’s dreamlike visual texture\, which is much better appreciated on a proper 16mm print. \n\n\n\nFlaming Creatures will be followed by a 16mm print of Ron Rice’s Chumlum (1963)\, an experimental short film shot during the production of Jack Smith’s unfinished Normal Love\, which was meant to be the follow-up to Flaming Creatures. Both a behind-the-scenes document of Smith and his cast\, and a beguiling work of art in its own right\, Rice makes use of Smith’s tools to notably different ends. \n\n\n\nSpectrum Between is an independent\, nomadic film exhibition group based in Portland. We are dedicated to screening all manner of experimental\, avant-garde\, and underground films in their original analog formats.
