SUMMARY:Asako I & II
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nA mysterious and intoxicating pop romance\, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s follow-up to the acclaimed Happy Hour begins with Asako\, a young woman who meets and falls madly in love with a drifter\, Baku\, who one day drifts right out of her life. Two years later\, working in Tokyo\, Asako sees Baku again — or\, rather\, a young\, solid businessman named Ryohei who bears a striking resemblance to her old flame. They begin to build a happy life together until traces of Asako’s past start to resurface. \n\n\n\nReleased before his international breakthrough\, the Academy Award-nominated Drive My Car\, Hamaguchi’s adaptation is based on the novel Netemo Sametemo by Tomoka Shibasaki and first debuted in Oregon at the 2019 Portland International Film Festival. We’re excited to bring back this rarely-screen work from one of Japan’s most celebrated modern directors. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi\n Year: 2018\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 119 minutes

SUMMARY:The Friends
DESCRIPTION:Portland premiere of the new 4K restoration! \n\n\n\nPart of the Hanabi Film Festival\, running select days Aug. 18 – 31. Limited festival passes available for access to all films. \n\n\n\nIt’s the dog days of summer vacation. Up to no good\, a group of three wily young friends discover a decrepit house and the old coot who lives there all alone. They begin to spy on him\, expecting to find his corpse when he dies. But soon\, as they learn the sad story behind his present wretchedness\, the boys develop a touching bond with the old-timer. They even help replant his overgrown garden. \n\n\n\nShinji Somai’s follow-up to his acclaimed Moving is a comic spectacle of movement and play and a stirring contemplation on time’s ravages and delights. Evoking other preteen anarchist masterpieces like Typhoon Club (also screening at this year’s Hanabi Film Festival) and P.P. Rider\, the film is a testament to Somai’s singular ability to enter into the unruly world of children\, using his liberated long takes to stir up the energies of a raucous ensemble of first-time performers. \n\n\n\nWe’re excited to bring a brand new restoration of this beloved Japanese film to Portland on the same weekend that it debuts in North America at New York’s Lincoln Center before receiving a wider release. \n\n\n\nScreened in Japanese with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n \n Director: Shinji Sômai\n Year: 1994\n Country: Japan\n Runtime: 113 minutes
